Method for removal and detoxication of dissolved metals in a rainwater discharge

Electro-magnetic filter apparatus and method of operating to separate and remove oily magnetic solids from wastewaters. The filter apparatus includes a filter assembly having an electro-magnetic coil that encircles a canister. The canister has an interior space defined by a wall surface and a first perforated baffle spaced apart from a second perforated baffle. The interior space contains a ferromagnetic matrix comprising split ring lock washers. The feed side end portion of the canister communicates with the wastewater source that contains the oily magnetic solids, a wash-water supply, a pressurized air supply and a disposal stream. The discharge side end portion of the canister communicates with a recycling stream, the disposal stream and the wash-water supply. A feed side valve arrangement selectively introduces the wastewater into the feed side end portion of the canister during filtering operations, and selectively injects a pressurized air/wash-water mixture from the wash-water and pressurized air supply into the feed side end portion of the matrix canister during up-flow backwashing operations. The ferromagnetic matrix is fluidized by the pressurized air/wash-water mixture the during the up-flow backwashing. A discharge side valve arrangement selectively discharges clean effluent through the recycling stream during filtering or introduces water, from the wash-water supply, into the discharge end portion of the matrix canister during down-flow backwashing.

Method for magnetically filtering wastewaters containing oil-coated mill

A system and method for disposing of vacuum degasser contaminants which includes adjusting the pH, in a reactor vessel, of a vacuum degasser underflow stream to precipitate lead and zinc into particulate matter. The solids are then concentrated in a thickener to produce an underflow stream that is communicated to a holding vessel to settle. The overflow from the thickener is filtered through a sand filter and discharged to meet applicable NPDES permit limits. Lime is added to the slurry in the holding vessel to further settle the solids, to aid in filtration, and to prevent leaching of lead from the filter cake during TCLP testing. An overlaying supernatant is decanted from the holding vessel and returned to the reactor vessel for further treatment. Limestone is added to the underflow stream. The resulting slurry is dewatered to produce a friable, non-hazardous filtrate cake and a filtrate. The filtrate is directed back to reactor vessel prior to discharge for further treatment.

The present invention relates to a method of completely recovering nickel and zinc metal from multiple plating process waste streams by first separating the waste streams into a clean, relatively constant flow and/or concentration fraction and a dirty, variable flow and/or concentration fraction. Metal is recovered from the clean fraction by ion-exchange so as to concentrate the extracted metals for direct return to the plating bath. The effluent from the ion-exchange step is then blended with the dirty, variable flow and concentration fraction. This blended flow is first neutralized and then precipitated in a two-stage process using a sodium hydroxide solution. The resultant slurry containing the metal precipitate is filtered to yield a filter cake containing recovered nickel and zinc. This filter cake can then be further processed to recover the metal for reintroduction into the plating bath or for other uses.

An industrial wastewater treatment method is described whereby heavy metals dissolved in the wastewater are precipitated as a slurry which, when allowed to settle, will form a sludge containing at least 10 weight percent solids. In the method, an aqueous suspension or solution of a neutralizing agent is introduced into a first reactor. A suspension containing particles of carrier agent is also introduced into the first reactor. A portion, if not all, of the neutralizing agent is adsorbed on the surface of the particles of the carrier, which are maintained in suspension in the first reactor. The carrier, with its adsorbed neutralizing agent, is passed to a second reactor and simultaneously the contaminated industrial wastewater is added to the second reactor. The pH of the wastewater is adjusted to a range between 8.4 and 10.6 by the neutralizing agent. Within such pH range, a substantial portion, if not all, of the heavy metals are precipitated in the form of a slurry. The mixture in the second reactor is passed to a solids separation device. The solids in the slurry settle to the bottom of the device to form a sludge which is removed therefrom. Purified water is removed as an overflow from the separation device. Optionally, a flocculant may be added to aid in settling the solids. Insoluble calcium salts may also be precipitated in the second reactor. Such insoluble salts are adsorbed on the surface of the carrier and/or the heavy metal slurry particles and become part of the sludge formed in the separation device.

A method for cleaning sinter plant gas emissions using a wet electrostatic precipitator system having separate recirculating wash liquor loops for the high voltage precipitator section and the pre-scrubber section. The system is operated with acidic washing liquor to avoid scaling and deposition of solids within the system.
