Disclosed is a composition comprising, consisting essentially of, consisting of, or produced from polyvinyl chloride, filler, and an impact strength-retaining amount of a modifier wherein the modifier includes is or an ethylene copolymer, an acid anhydride- or acid monoester-modified polyolefin, or combinations thereof. Also disclosed is a process comprising combining an impact strength-retaining amount of a modifier to a blend that comprises or is produced by combining a rigid PVC and one or more fillers. The combining is carried out under a condition sufficient to prevent or minimize the reduction of impact strength of the blend, to reduce the molten viscosity of the blend, or to minimize the loss in stiffness (flexural modulus) of the blend, in comparison to the unmodified blend.

An ionomer/polyamide blend with improved flow (e.g., lower viscosity) can be achieved while simultaneously maintaining or improving physical properties such as low temperature Izod impact resistance by the addition of low molecular weight ethylene/acrylic acid copolymer (e.g., so-called acid wax polymer derived from copolymerizing at least 5 weight percent and preferably greater than 9 weight percent acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid with ethylene and having a melt index, ASTM D1238, preferably greater than 900 dg/min and most preferably greater than 5,000 dg/min). Optionally, the blends can further contain additives such as very low density polyethylene (VLDPE), ethylene propylene elastomer (EPR), ethylene propylene diene monomer elastomer (EPDM), corresponding maleic anhydride grafted elastomers (MAN-g-VLDPE; MAN-g-EPR; and MAN-g-EPDM), or mixtures thereof. The blends exhibiting improved flow characteristics according to the instant invention are particularly useful in the manufacture of automotive parts, panels and the like having a &ldquo;class A&rdquo; surface.

Ionomer/polyamide blends with improved flow and impact properties

An ionomer/high density polyethylene (HDPE) blend with improved flow (e.g., lower viscosity) can be achieved without significantly degrading physical properties such as impact resistance and tensile strength by the addition of low molecular weight ethylene/acrylic acid copolymer (e.g., so-called acid wax polymer derived from copolymerizing at least 5 weight percent and preferably greater than 9 weight percent acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid with ethylene and having a melt index, ASTM D1238, preferably greater than 900 dg/min and preferably greater than 5,000 dg/min). The blend may further have for every one hundred parts by weight of ionomer/high density polyethylene blend from one to twenty parts by weight polyethylene modified with from 0.2 to 5.0 weight percent maleic anhydride comonomer as an impact resistance additive. The blends exhibiting improved flow characteristics according to the instant invention are particularly useful in the manufacture of automotive parts, panels and the like having a &ldquo;class A&rdquo; surface.

Ionomer/high density polyethylene blends with improved flow

A maleic anhydride modified ethylene polymer/ionomer/high density polyethylene blend having improved impact resistance (e.g., increased low temperature Izod impact) can be achieved by the addition of a maleic anhydride grafted high ethylene derived polymer (e.g., MAN-g-HDPE, MAN-g-VLDPE, MAN-g-EPR, MAN-g-EPDM, and the like) to ionomer and high density polyethylene during blending. The blends exhibiting improved impact resistance characteristics according to the instant invention are particularly useful in the manufacture of automotive parts, panels and the like having a &ldquo;class A&rdquo; surface.

The present invention relates to bonding resins having excellent adhesion to polar polymers, particularly ionomers, acid copolymers and ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer. These resins preferably contain: 1) an ethylene polymer or copolymer (ungrafted, grafted or partially grafted); 2) a grafted elastomer; and 3) optionally, an ethylene alpha olefin copolymer which is wholly or partially grafted. Preferred grafting comonomers include maleic anhydride and derivatives thereof.

Adhesion compositions for multilayer structures

A laminated structure comprising at least two non-adhesive layers and at least one adhesive layer wherein the adhesive layer is made of a composition stabilized against thermal crosslinking and consequent reduction of its melt index, comprising a uniform dispersion of antimony oxide in a blend of a matrix polymer which is a dipolymer of ethylene with an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or a terpolymer of ethylene with an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and with another ethylenically unsaturated comonomer, carbon dioxide or sulfur dioxide; and organo-halogen fire-retardant; and a stabilizing polymer which is a high melt index copolymer of ethylene with acrylic or methacrylic acid. Such laminated structures include laminates used in packaging and building construction.

Laminates with adhesive layers of fire retardant, melt stable

A composition stabilized against thermal crosslinking and consequent reduction of its melt index, comprising a uniform dispersion of antimony oxide in a blend of a matrix polymer which is a dipolymer of ethylene with an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or a terpolymer of ethylene with an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and with another ethylenically unsaturated comonomer, carbon dioxide or sulfur dioxide; an organo-halogen fire-retardant; and a stabilizing polymer which is a high melt index copolymer of ethylene with acrylic or methacrylic acid. Such compositions are useful as adhesive layers in laminates used in packaging and building construction.

Fire retardant melt stable ethylene/carboxylic acid copolymer composition

A laminated structure comprising at least two nonadhesive layers and at least one white-pigmented adhesive layer, wherein the white-pigmented adhesive layer is made of a composition stabilized against thermal crosslinking and consequent reduction of its melt index, consisting essentially of a uniform dispersion of alumina-coated titanium dioxide pigment in a blend of a matrix polymer which is a dipolymer of ethylene with an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or a terpolymer of ethylene with an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and with another ethylenically unsaturated comonomer, or with carbon dioxide or sulfur dioxide, with a stabilizing polymer which is a high melt index copolymer of ethylene with acrylic or methacrylic acid. Such laminated structures include, for example, toothpaste tubes, condiment pouches, traffic road signs, and roadway lane marking tapes.

Laminates with adhesive layer of white-pigmented, melt-stable

A composition stabilized against thermal crosslinking and consequent reduction of its melt index, consisting essentially of a uniform dispersion of alumina-coated titanium dioxide pigment in a blend of a matrix polymer which is a dipolymer of ethylene with an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or a terpolymer of ethylene with an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and with another ethylenically unsaturated comonomer, or with carbon dioxide or sulfur dioxide, with a stabilizing polymer which is a high melt index copolymer of ethylene with acrylic or methacrylic acid. Such compositions are useful in melt-fabricating white-pigmented articles such as, e.g., toothpaste tubes and condiment pouches.

White-pigmented, melt-stable ethylene/carboxylic acid copolymer

Photocell modules wherein one or more photocells are encapsulated within a thermoplastic polymeric pottant between the layers of a rigid or flexible laminate. The pottant is a graft copolymer of (a) at least one addition polymerizable backbone monomer having a glass transition temperature (T.sub.g) of less than 0.degree., (b) at least one addition polymerizable backbone monomer having a T.sub.g of 50.degree.-150.degree. C., and (c) a poly (vinyl aromatic) addition polymerizable macromonomer of 3,000-50,000 molecular weight having a T.sub.g of at least 30.degree. C. The pottant is highly light-transmissive, electrically insulating and provides excellent protection for the photocells and circuitry at low cost.

A thermoplastic molding composition containing a non-equimolar copolymer containing less than 50 mole percent of an .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride and more than 50 mole percent of a monovinyl-substituted hydrocarbon monomer and an impact modifying substance consisting of a styrene/butadiene star block thermoplastic elastomer, is disclosed.
