In one embodiment, a method of automated missile launcher reloading includes aligning one or more collars of a shelving system with a path of a canister and activating one or more rollers of the shelving system to translate the canister into the one or more collars. The method also includes coupling a first collar of the one or more collars to the canister and adjusting the one or more collars to align the canister with a path of a launcher cell. The method further includes translating the one or more collars into the path of the launcher cell to feed the canister into the launcher cell.

Electron beam manufacturing processes, and systems that perform the processes, are described that utilize real-time analysis and control of the electron beam manufacturing processes by detecting secondary x-rays that are generated as a result of the electron beam contacting a workpiece. The detected secondary x-rays are used to generate, in real-time, a three-dimensional cross-sectional image of the portion or region of the workpiece surrounding the location contacted by the electron beam. In addition, real-time analysis of the three-dimensional cross-sectional image can be used to detect defects and real-time re-work or correction of defects can be performed by directing an electron beam back to an area with a defect.

A technique for generating good system decompositions is disclosed. The illustrative embodiment uses evolutionary programming in combination with a fitness function to generate a system decomposition that has a low degree of coupling and a high degree of coherence. A system is represented by an object-oriented specification using the Unified Modeling Language (UML); the UML specification is then represented by an eXtended Markup Language (XML) document, and the contents of the document are transformed into a nested-list data structure that resembles source code in a functional programming language such as Common LISP. The nested-list data structure and an appropriate fitness function are input to an evolutionary programming engine that operates on the nested-list data structure as though it were a source code program, and generates an output source code program. A system decomposition is then derived from the output source code program.

In an exemplary embodiment, an augmented reality system for traffic control combines data from a plurality of sensors to display, in real time, information about traffic control objects, such as airplanes. The sensors collect data, such as infrared, ultraviolet, and acoustic data. The collected data is weather-independent due to the combination of different sensors. The traffic control objects and their associated data are then displayed visually to the controller regardless of external viewing conditions. The system also responds to the controller's physical gestures or voice commands to select a particular traffic control object for close-up observation or to open a communication channel with the particular traffic control object.
