A fifth wheel coupling device is adapted for a towing vehicle that vertically receives a kingpin of a trailer. The device includes a plate having a kingpin hole formed therethrough defining a vertical path adapted to permit entry of the kingpin into the kingpin hole and through the plate along the vertical path, and to prevent release of the kingpin out of the kingpin hole along a lateral path leading outside the plate. A support base is attached to the plate, and is adapted to mount the plate to the towing vehicle. A lifting mechanism is operatively connected to the plate and is adapted to be mounted on the towing vehicle for raising and lowering the plate relative to the trailer. A locking mechanism is movably attached to the plate and is provided with an actuating portion. The locking mechanism is configured to be automatically actuable and adapted for releasably locking the kingpin relative to the plate and the locking mechanism upon engagement of the kingpin with the actuating portion of the locking mechanism.

Vertical coupling fifth wheel device and method of use

An improved slide rail for a fifth wheel hitch assembly is disclosed that has T-shaped cross-section with a horizontal top section and a vertical base section. The horizontal top section includes scalloped edges, and the vertical base section includes weld pockets.

Fifth wheel slide rail

A fifth wheel slide assembly secondary lock includes an elongated cam member supported by a spindle extending upward from a sliding pedestal. A pair of linkage bars are pivotally coupled by one end to opposing ends of the cam member, the other ends of the bars being coupled to wedges operable for selectively engaging slide rails mounted to a vehicle frame in order to maintain a longitudinal position of said pedestal. The pedestal includes at least one stop extending upward from the pedestal at a height that extends above an arc defined by the rotation of the cam.

Fifth wheel slide assembly secondary lock

A secondary lock assembly for a fifth wheel, where the fifth wheel includes a hitch plate with a rearward opening slot to receive a trailer kingpin and a transversely sliding primary locking member for retaining the kingpin within the slot. The assembly comprises a tie bar pivotally connected at its middle to the primary locking member and a transversely oriented pull bar pivotally connected at an inner end to the forward end of the tie bar. The pull bar comprises a rearward offset tab. A latch is pivotally connected roughly at the center of the latch to the forward end of the tie bar, and also pivotally connected at a point rearwardly and inwardly offset from the first pivoting connection to the offset tab. A detent extends from a transverse wall comprised in said hitch plate such that said detent lies in the same horizontal plane as said latch.

Fifth wheel secondary lock

An adjustable height fifth wheel hitch is provided. The fifth wheel hitch comprises a pedestal and a fifth wheel hitch assembly. The fifth wheel hitch assembly includes journal bearings which pivotally connect with risers of the pedestal. The risers of the pedestal include a plurality of openings located at different levels. The height of the fifth wheel assembly in relation to the tractor may be adjusted by aligning openings in the journal bearings with co-level openings in the risers and inserting a mounting pin through such openings.

Adjustable height fifth wheel hitch

An articulated selective adjustment apparatus carried within the pedestal of a fifth wheel assembly comprises a mounting plate pivotally connected to a plunger arm configured for selective extension and withdrawal from the pedestal, and having ends to which are pivotally connected first and second prongs having interior ends disposed toward the pedestal that are pivotally connected to the mounting plate ends.

Articulated fifth wheel selective adjustment means

A bracket assembly for an adjustable fifth wheel hitch is suitable for mounting to a slide rail assembly, which itself is mounted to parallel longitudinal truck frame members, where the slide rails have a generally t-shaped cross-section. The slide rail is comprised of a horizontal portion and a vertical portion, the vertical portion including a plurality of spaced-apart gaps. The bracket assembly comprises a bracket body with longitudinal disposed front and rear ends, with respect to the truck body, a longitudinal channel defined in the underside that extends from front and rear openings defined in the respective surfaces of the front and rear ends with a generally t-shaped cross-section to slidably receive said slide rail. The bracket body also has two spaced-apart transverse channels defined in the underside, perpendicular to the longitudinal channel. The transverse channels align with two of the space-apart gaps as the bracket body is slid along the slide rail. The bracket body also includes a rounded upper portion for providing pivoting support to a fifth wheel hitch plate, and forward and rear tie-bar flanges extending from one side of the lower portion of the body for mounting support for a tie bar to mutually tie brackets together.

Bracket assembly for a fifth wheel coupling

An integrated cross-member mount comprises an inter-frame mount seated within opposing longitudinal channels of parallel adjacent truck frame members and comprises a top surface within each lateral portion of which is defined a longitudinally-oriented row of spaced-apart, shaped apertures, and at least two substantially vertical flanges extending downward from the lateral periphery of the top surface that are dimensioned to be conforming to the inner surfaces of truck frame members. Also included is a sliding pedestal having lateral skids seated upon respective portions of rows of spaced-apart apertures and extending into vertical gaps between the top surface of the mount and the truck frame member. Each skid includes a plurality of spaced-apart, shaped skid apertures that can align with a corresponding plurality of shaped apertures within the top surface of the mount. Each skid also includes a pawl pivotally mounted on each skid having a one or more teeth insertable through the skid apertures and the shaped apertures. The pedestal also includes a plurality of pivot bearings mating to a corresponding plurality of bearings of a fifth wheel hitch plate.

Fifth wheel coupling with inter-frame mount

A removable locking mechanism for a fifth wheel hitch is provided which includes a mounting plate removably attachable within a fifth wheel chassis formed to support a fifth wheel hitch plate that has an aperture in the load surface thereof. The mounting plate is formed with a u-shaped throat dimensioned to receive a trailer kingpin and a top surface configured to be co-planar with the fifth wheel hitch plate load surface when seated within the chassis. A locking mechanism for retaining the kingpin against said closed end of the throat is mounted to the underside of the mounting plate and includes a cam arm; and a bumper arm pivotally attached to the cam arm configured to engage a bumper stop formed in the mounting plate underside; a sliding jaw member slidably mounted to the cam arm; and a secondary lock member for preventing unintended disengagement of the lock mechanism.

Fifth wheel coupling assembly with removable locking mechanism

A fifth wheel assembly comprises a fifth wheel having a plurality of journal bearings extending generally downward from its underside, and an 'I-shaped' transverse beam member for mounting the assembly to a truck frame. The beam member is dimensioned to span across parallel longitudinal truck frame members and it includes mounting flanges extending generally downward from either lateral side where the mounting flanges have a plurality of apertures for receiving suitable fasteners inserted therein for mounting said beam member to the truck frame members. The transverse member also includes a plurality of pivot bearing pairs to receive the journal bearings of the fifth wheel which is coupled thereto by a trunnion.

Fifth wheel assembly

In a fifth wheel hitch, a locking mechanism for retaining a trailer kingpin within a fifth wheel slot. The locking mechanism includes a jaw assembly comprised of two opposing jaw members pivotally attached at one end to the underside of the hitch plate, a longitudinally sliding cam interposed between the jaw members with a tip that contacts a bumper. The bumper is pivotally attached to tie bar that has its rear most end pivotally attached to the underside of the hitch plate. The mechanism also includes a wedge member and a secondary lock member pivotally attached thereto, where the lock member has a guide extension inserted through a guide hole in the tie bar. Rotation of the tie bar inward causes the wedge member and secondary lock to move inward until the wedge member is seated to the rear of the closed jaw assembly and the secondary lock rotates to engage a detent.

Compact fifth wheel locking mechanism

A slide rail assembly for a fifth wheel hitch assembly is disclosed that includes an angle member for directly mounting the assembly to a truck frame member, and a t-shaped slide rail attached to a horizontal portion of the angle member, the t-shaped slide rail including a row of spaced gaps.

In a fifth wheel hitch, a locking mechanism for retaining a trailer kingpin within a fifth wheel slot. The locking mechanism includes a jaw assembly comprised of a cam arm pivotally attached at one end to the underside of the hitch plate, a bumper arm pivotally attached by one of its ends to the cam arm, a sliding jaw with a recess for receiving the kingpin shank, and a secondary lock member, pivotally attached at a point intermediate its two ends to the rear portion of the cam arm. The locking mechanism also includes a main spring to pull the free end of the cam arm toward a closed position. A release rod is coupled at one end to secondary lock member at an attachment point that is disposed away from the lock member's axis.
