A fluid dispensing system with a fluid cartridge having a fluid reservoir and an ejection head. The ejection head has fluid ejectors that are in fluid flow communication with the fluid reservoir. A fluid detection circuit is electrically connected to at least one of the fluid ejectors. The fluid detection circuit is configured to detect and characterize a fluid in the fluid ejector, where the fluid detection circuit characterizes the resistivity of the fluid by adjusting an ejector voltage of the at least one of the fluid ejectors.

Fluid sense circuit with variable sensitivity

A microfluidic pump with thermal control. The microfluidic pump employs a fluid motivation mechanism that moves microscopic fluid volumes through a conduit using thermal vapor bubbles generated using supercritical heating. Aspects of the microfluidic pump include the use of a pump temperature controller that monitors temperatures associated with the microfluidic pump and slows or pauses operation of the microfluidic pump to reduce the rate at which heat is generated allowing additional time for heat to be passively dissipated. Controlling the upper microfluidic pump temperature prevents or reduces overheating of the fluid being pumped that renders the fluid less suitable or unsuitable for its intended purpose or harm to the microfluidic pump. Other aspects of the pump temperature controller include an optional substrate heater that helps raise the fluid temperature to a selected operational range for better performance of the fluid and/or the microfluidic pump.

Microfluidic pump with thermal control

A micro-fluidic device includes a plurality of heating elements on a substrate for heating the substrate. They define a plurality of temperature regions having distinct temperatures on the substrate. A flow feature layer is formed above the substrate to define a channel extending across the substrate through each temperature region. As fluid is repeatedly pumped within the channel, it flows from one temperature region to a next temperature region to undergo thermal cycling. Fluid wells reside in the flow feature layer under a cover and connect to the channel whereby fluid can dwell for diagnostic applications.

Micro-fluidic modules on a chip for diagnostic applications

A microfluidic pump on a monolithic chip. A closed length of channel is disposed on the chip, with a plurality of energizers disposed along the length of the channel. Each energizer is associated with a unique energizer designation. An onboard controller and energizer fire control lines are also disposed on the chip. One each of the energizer fire control lines is electrically connecting one each of the energizers to the onboard controller. Inputs are electrically connected to the onboard controller, for connecting the onboard controller to an external controller that is not disposed on the chip. The inputs include a power input, a ground input, and an enable input. The onboard controller has circuitry to (a) receive from the external controller an enable on the enable input, (b) send a timed sequence of fire commands on the energizer fire control lines to a selected number of energizers that is greater than one, starting with a stored starting energizer and ending with an ending energizer, and (c) update the stored starting energizer with the designation for the energizer next following the ending energizer.

Microfluidic pump

A fluid cartridge has a bottle to retain a volume of fluid. An ejector chip resides in fluid communication with the bottle and causes ejection of fluid upon activation of fluid ejectors. Control logic coordinates ejector activation with dose control logic and temperature control circuitry. The dose control logic pre-specifies an amount of fluid to be ejected and prevents further ejection upon reaching the amount. Meanwhile, the temperature control circuit inhibits any ejection until a temperature of the fluid is within a predefined acceptable range. Bottle modularity, fluid dispense-areas and group-control of the ejectors facilitate certain designs.

Fluid cartridge and system for dispensing fluid

A micro-fluidic device includes a plurality of heaters on a substrate for heating the substrate. The plurality of heaters define a plurality of temperature regions having distinct temperatures on the substrate. As fluid is repeatedly pumped within the channel, it flows from one temperature region to a next temperature region to undergo thermal cycling.

A chip having a substrate for amplifying genetic material includes a substrate heater having a plurality of substrate heating resistors. The heating resistors define a first temperature zone for maintaining a first temperature, a second temperature zone for maintaining a second temperature below the first temperature, and a third temperature zone for maintaining a third temperature between the first and second temperatures, on the substrate. A flow path formed on the substrate allows conveying of reactions to the first temperature zone, the third temperature zone, and the second temperature zone so as to undergo denaturing, annealing, and extension, respectively, according to a polymerase chain reaction process, for at least one cycle.

A micro-fluidic pump comprises one or more channels having an array of resistive heaters, an inlet, outlet and a substrate as a heat sink and a means of cooling the device. The pump is operated with a fire-to-fire delay and/or a cycle-to-cycle delay to control the pumping rate and minimize heating of liquid inside the pump during its operation.

A fire pulse circuit for use in an inkjet printer includes an input control signal transmitted from a controller to a logic AND gate and to fire truncation logic; fire truncation logic adapted to truncate a pulse width of the input control signal to a maximum allowable pulse width if the duration of the pulse exceeds a maximum allowable time; a logic AND gate that receives inputs from both the input control signal and the fire truncation logic to produce an output fire pulse signal that operates to optimally fire an inkjet heater driver logic to heat the heater to nucleate ink from the print head. The circuit is formed from either a combination of digital and analog components or from exclusively digital components. A method of using the circuit to generate an output fire pulse to an inkjet heater driver logic is also disclosed.

Fire pulse circuit and method of use

A substrate heating system for an inkjet printhead. The substrate heating system includes heating resistors distributed in association with the ink jet nozzle structures, and located thermally adjacent thereto. The plural switching transistors that control the current through the substrate heating resistors are also distributed with the ink jetting nozzle structures, together with the substrate heating resistors. Polysilicon is used in constructing the substrate heating resistors. Cells of the substrate heaters can be arranged physically in a linear manner, along the nozzle structures. The substrate heater cells can be controlled so that the temperature of various zones of nozzle structures can be controlled.

Inkjet printhead substrate with distributed heater elements

Micro-fluid ejection apparatuses and devices, and methods related to communication in and with the same. One such micro-fluid ejection apparatus includes a controller configured to generate a data signal, and a transmitter configured to convert the data signal to a current signal. The apparatus further includes a conductor capable of carrying the current signal, and a receiver configured to receive the current signal from the conductor and to convert the current signal to a second data signal. The micro-fluid ejection apparatus is configured to operate on the second data signal. In one embodiment, the micro-fluid ejection apparatus may be a printing apparatus, such as an inkjet printing apparatus. In some embodiments, the current signal comprises a pair of corresponding differential current signals and/or current transfer logic signals offset from a base amperage level. In some embodiments, the transmitter and controller are provided within a main printing control board, while the receiver is provided within a printhead cartridge or a printhead carrier, and the operation comprises a printing function.

Micro-fluid ejection apparatus signal communication devices and methods

A printing apparatus is provided that precisely control the transition of an electrical signal that causes a printing substance to be deposited. In particular, in some embodiments, a circuit is configured to control the application of a firing pulse to a printing element, and the printing element is configured to control the application of a printing substance. The circuit in this embodiment is configured to condition or control the transition of the firing pulse from the first state to the second state such that current through the printing element dissipates to zero over a period of time that is neither too fast nor too slow.

Methods and apparatuses for control of a signal in a printing apparatus

Current control circuit for micro-fluid ejection heaters. In one embodiment, the current through a heater in a micro-fluid ejection device may be monitored and regulated to maintain a particular value or range of values. In such an embodiment, the heater current may be monitored and compared to a reference value. A signal may be induced based upon the divergence of the heater current from the value and the signal may be applied to the logic switch for the monitored heater. The logic switch may regulate the current through the heater based upon the induced signal. As a result of the regulation of the current, the induced signal may dynamically change thereby allowing fast regulation of the heater current.
