A method and apparatus for continuous RF signal visualization with high resolution acquires RF signal data within a specified frequency bandwidth seamlessly to produce digitized time domain data. The digitized time domain data is processed in both the frequency and time domains to form high resolution spectral and time traces which are stored. To match human visualization abilities, the high resolution traces are combined to form low resolution traces which are displayed. With the spectral traces, spectrum bitmaps may be generated and stored so that the spectrum bitmap for any displayed spectral trace may be recalled and displayed. The high resolution traces for any specified low resolution trace may be recalled for display. Finally multiple trigger event types may be generated and displayed with the displayed traces.

Continuous RF signal visualization with high resolution

A test and measurement instrument provides for increased transient event detection by adjusting data sampling periods. The test and measurement instrument includes a data sampler for acquiring first sampled data and a data processor structured to process the first sampled data. The data processor operates during a first data processing period. Also included in the instrument is a sample time adjustor structured to allow a user to select a time for the data sampler to acquire second sampled data. The time for the data sampler to acquire the second sampled data occurs during the first data processing period. The time for acquiring the second sampled data may be determined by generating a probability distribution function, then applying the distribution function to the available times during the first data processing period that the second sample data may be collected. Methods of use of the test and measurement instrument are also provided.

System for improving probability of transient event detection

Disclosed is a test and measurement instrument having a multiple variable bandwidth frequency mask. The instrument includes an input processor for receiving an input signal and producing a digital signal, as well as a trigger signal generator for generating a trigger signal on the occurrence of a trigger event. A time to frequency converter converts a frame of digital data from the digital signal into a frequency spectrum having at least two frequency bins of dissimilar frequency widths. Each frequency bin has a power amplitude value. The trigger signal is generated when the power amplitude value of any of the at least two frequency bins violates an associated reference power level. In some cases the output may be shown as a density trace, and the trigger signal generated when any point of the density trace violates an associated density threshold.

Frequency mask trigger with non-uniform bandwidth segments

Time correlation of signal to distortion characteristics is achieved by acquiring time domain data for a frequency band representing a communication signal, the communication signal having multiple channels. The time domain data is simultaneously converted to frequency and demodulation domain data in sequential time blocks. The frequency and demodulation domain data are processed to obtain respectively frequency and demodulation domain measurements. The resulting measurements are displayed simultaneously as a function of time for all the time blocks and/or for a selected one of the time blocks. An ACLRogram display provides a display having a time axis and a frequency axis in the form of bars spanning the frequency band for each time block with each bar being divided into frequency sub-bands representing a main channel and adjacent side channels, the shading of each segment of the bar representing a measurement value for that segment.
