An ablation apparatus for creating a lesion in target tissue, the ablation apparatus including a handle, an elongate shaft extending from the handle to a distal tip, where the shaft includes a first portion, an ablation portion distal to the first portion and having an outer sheath, and at least one ablation energy element disposed within the outer sheath, where a space is formed between the at least one ablation energy element and the outer sheath. The ablation apparatus further includes a thermally conductive liner disposed within the space.

An ablation apparatus for creating a lesion in target tissue has a handle, an elongate shaft extending from the handle and a distal ablation portion. The distal ablation portion includes a cryogen flow manifold defining a plurality of fluid pathways between an insert body and a sleeve. Cryogen is circulated through the plurality of fluid pathways to create the lesion in the target tissue.

An endovascular near critical fluid based cryoablation catheter for creating an elongated lengthwise-continuous lesion in tissue can comprise an elongated shaft, a flexible distal tissue treatment section, and a distal tip. A plurality of flexible tubes can extend through the distal treatment section to transport a near critical fluid to and from the distal tip. The distal treatment section can also include a flexible fluid-sealed cover or barrier layer surrounding the delivery tubes. The cover and tubes can collectively define a space which is filled with a fluidic thermally conductive media. The thermally conductive media, fluid delivery tubes, and the cover can be arranged such that a flow of the near critical fluid through the tube bundle transfers heat between a target tissue and the distal treatment section of the catheter thereby creating the elongated lengthwise-continuous lesion in the tissue.

An endoesophageal balloon and catheter for operation with a transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) probe includes an inflatable balloon body disposed over the ultrasound element of the TEE probe, a liquid inflow lumen in fluid communication with the balloon, and a liquid outflow lumen in fluid communication with the balloon. A method of creating a lesion in cardiac tissue where the method includes deploying a distal treatment section of an ablation catheter into a heart chamber and manipulating the distal treatment section against the cardiac tissue and into a curved shape that encloses a plurality of vessel entries in the heart chamber. The method further includes commencing a first application of ablation energy from the distal treatment section to the cardiac tissue and halting the first application of ablation energy to the cardiac tissue. An endovascular near critical fluid based cryoablation catheter for creating an elongate lengthwise-continuous lesion in tissue comprises an elongate shaft, a flexible distal tissue treatment section, and a distal tip. A plurality of flexible tubes extend through the distal treatment section to transport a near critical fluid to and from the distal tip. The distal treatment section is controllably deployed to match the contour of an anatomical region to be treated. In embodiments the distal treatment section includes a superelastic material and can assume a plurality of different shapes based on the distance ejected from an outer sleeve member. When the catheter is activated, heat is transferred between a target tissue and the distal treatment section of the catheter thereby creating the elongate lengthwise-continuous lesion in the tissue.

Endovascular near critical fluid based cryoablation catheter having plurality of preformed treatment shapes

An apparatus and method for the dissociation of soft proteinaceous tissue using pulsed rapid variable direction energy field flow fractionization is disclosed. The pulsed rapid disruptive energy field is created by the use of a probe which surrounds the soft proteinaceous tissue to be removed. Once the adhesive mechanism between tissue constituents has been compromised, fluidic techniques are used to remove the dissociated tissue.

A catheter usable for cryogenic ablation of tissues is described. The catheter has a deflectable segment with a reduced diameter and a tip portion with a diameter greater than the reduced diameter. A resilient element allows for bending of the deflectable segment preferentially in one plane, and an actuator is used to control the bending of the deflectable segment.

A sheath for use on a closed loop Joule-Thomson cryosurgical probe, and the combination of the sheath and the closed loop probe. The sheath is slipped over the probe, thereby separating the probe from the environment. The sheath has a grip which fits over the handle of the cryosurgical probe, and an extendible shroud which can be longitudinally extended to cover tubing and which are attached to the handle. The sheath has a hollow multi-lumen catheter shaped and sized to fit snugly over the cannula of the cryosurgical probe. The catheter is not thermally conductive, preventing transfer of heat from the ambient to the gas mixture, and preventing the freezing of tissues at undesired locations along the catheter. A thermally conductive cap or tip is attached to the distal end of the hollow catheter. The thermally conductive cap or tip is biased against the cold tip on the probe by a biasing element in the sheath assembly, to promote heat transfer.

A remotely bendable section adjacent a distal viewing tip enables movement of the tip between a neutral position and angularly disposed positions. A deflection control lever on a proximal control member causes deflection of the viewing tip by means of two sets of operating cables which are operatively connected at one end to the control member and at the other end to axially spaced locations along the controllably bendable section. The control member includes a mechanism for sequentially displacing cables within each set. The operating cables are constructed of flat ribbons to increase their flexibility in the bending plane while still providing axial strength. The wires are closely encased in an oval-shaped sheath along the length of the endoscope.
