Disclosed is a common aperture dual polarization antenna array (30). This common aperture dual polarization antenna array (30) includes an antenna aperture (36) and a plurality of centered slot arrays (32) positioned within the antenna aperture (36). A plurality of notch dipole arrays (34) are positioned within the antenna aperture (36) and positioned substantially orthogonal to the plurality of centered slot arrays (32). A first feed guide (46) is coupled to the plurality of centered slot arrays (32) and a second feed guide (56) is coupled to the plurality of notch dipole arrays (34).

A missile guidance antenna that is conformal to the missile surface, dual-polarized and broadband. Slotline notch array elements (30, 52) are inclined toward boresight for both the E and H-planes. This inclination directs a greater portion of the energy toward the front of the missile. The additional energy directed forward reduces the nullifying effects of the metallic skin on the tangential E-field and enhances the performance of the other polarization. The slotline elements (30, 52) can be packed with spacing close enough to allow for electronic beam steering without creating grating lobes in the field at the highest frequency of operation.

The invention is a radar system using sum and difference signals for tracking targets, wherein the system includes aperture means having a cross sectional area for transmitting energy toward a target and receiving return energy; and circuit means for generating sum and difference signals, the circuit means being selectively coupled to said aperture means, with the sum signal being generated using energy from the entire aperture means and with the difference signals being generated using return energy from the aperture means exclusive of energy from a predetermined area. The invention permits simultaneous optimization of the sum and difference signals and also suppresses the near-in sidelobes in the difference signals.
