A system for managing values associated with properties of elements within a process model can include a storage element for storing the process model and a processing element. The processing element can be configured to identify within the process model an element, to identify an object containing the element, to assign a value for a property of the element, and to retrieve the value for the property of element. The value for property of the element can be stored in location selected from one among an element modifier applied to the element, an object modifier applied to the object, a default set of values for the object, and a default set of values for the element, where the location for storing the value of the property of the element is selected such that the location has a higher relative priority than a location for storing a previous value for the property of the element.

Modifier management within process models

A user interface for creating relationships between visual modeling (e.g., UML) elements on a diagram is disclosed. The user interface utilizes two connector handles that represent 'source to target' and 'target to source' relationships. The connector handles are consistent across all shapes/elements in the diagram and are made to appear on the edge of an element shape nearest to the cursor. The source to target connector handle is used for gestures involving outgoing connections. The target to source connector handle is used for gestures involving incoming connections. The user creates a new relationship between a source and a target by selecting one of the connector handles on the source shape and dragging to the target context (element shape or blank area). Next the user is prompted to qualify the gesture by selecting from a menu the type of relationship desired to be created. A connection or edges in the diagram of the type representative of the user's selections is produced.

A computer method and system of diagramming provide a diagram of a subject model. In response to a primary edit to the subject model, the invention method and system generate a non-persistent view for secondary edits. The diagram is formed of notational elements corresponding to model elements of the subject model. The invention method and system provide a notation meta-model for persisting the notational elements with references to corresponding model elements. The notation meta-model allows notational elements to be recreated and changed dynamically in a manner free of replacing original notational elements.

Optimized computer diagramming method

A system and method for legacy system component incremental migration from a legacy system to a new system comprises a read-only ghost or shadow in the new system. When changes are made in the legacy system, the changes are incrementally and automatically migrated to the new system allowing the legacy system and the new system to maintain availability during the migration. The concept of 'mastership' is used where a component exists in the 'New System', but is actually mastered in the &#x201c;Legacy System&#x201d;. By allowing a sub-component to exist as a read-only ghost or shadow in the new system, and still be mastered/edited in the legacy system, a one-way bridge is provided so that the two systems can interact. The synchronization of the legacy system component is managed so that the ghost component is automatically updated when changes are made to the legacy system component and there is little maintenance that the user needs to do to create the bridge between the two systems.

Computer method and apparatus for connection tree routing in visual modeling of software is disclosed. Tree routing style is represented as a property of a subject connection. A router object manages location of bendpoints of the subject connection in a connection tree. The subject connection maintains an end node as its target instead of a trunk element of the connection tree. The router object is formed of a hierarchy of routers including branch routers, tree routers and forest routers. Different routers maintain different aspects of the tree data forming display of the connection tree.

A computer method and apparatus for visual modeling software programs represents a topic by providing a respective topic diagram. The topic diagram is non-editable and has non-persisting notation data. The topic diagram demonstrates a respective set of relationships between one or more given elements representative of the subject topic. The topic diagram is derived based on a query which saves search criteria and information that enables an editor to generate the diagram notation data. There are different topic providers for different queries. A topic service manages the topic providers and processes client calls (requests) regarding specific context and query. Queries are end-user customizable and are extensible per topic.
