A low inductance electrical spring connector for a disc drive interconnecting the conductors of a flex circuit support and seal apparatus to conductive traces on a PCB, the electrical spring connector having a dielectric housing with a plurality of spaced-apart insulator portions, and a plurality of conductive spring contacts disposed between the insulator portions. The dielectric housing forms an open ended insertion cavity disposable below the flex circuit support and seal apparatus. First ends of the conductive spring contacts are solderable to conductive traces on the PCB, while second ends of the conductive spring contacts are contact surfaces disposed in the insertion cavity . Inserting the conductors of the flex circuit adjacent the contact surfaces into the insertion cavity causes the contact surfaces to engage the conductors of the flex circuit to secure the flex circuit support and seal apparatus while providing electrical contact between the head-disc assembly and the printed circuit board.

The present invention provides a double grooved spacer for reducing coning of discs. A double grooved spacer includes a body portion with a plurality of spring flanges radially extending therefrom to form an inner radial groove and an outer radial groove. The body portion in conjunction with the plurality of spring flanges form a generally I-shaped cross-section. The double grooved spacer further includes circumferentially extending contact nodes disposed on the spring flanges so that the clamping force is localized at selected positions on the discs and the double grooved spacers to provide uniform distribution of the clamping force within the disc stack.

Flex support and seal apparatus for a disc drive

A low inductance electrical spring connector for a disc drive interconnecting the conductors of a flex circuit support and seal apparatus to conductive traces on a PCB, the electrical spring connector having a dielectric housing with a plurality of spaced-apart insulator portions, and a plurality of conductive spring contacts disposed between the insulator portions. The dielectric housing forms an open ended insertion cavity disposable below the flex circuit support and seal apparatus. First ends of the conductive spring contacts are solderable to conductive traces on the PCB, while second ends of the conductive spring contacts are contact surfaces disposed in the insertion cavity. Inserting the conductors of the flex circuit adjacent the contact surfaces into the insertion cavity causes the contact surfaces to engage the conductors of the flex circuit to secure the flex circuit support and seal apparatus while providing electrical contact between the head-disc assembly and the printed circuit board.

A transducer signal terminator for providing electrical connections between a plurality of read/write transducer lead wires and a preamplifier includes a substrate having a plurality of layers and has a plurality of intermediate strips. A plurality of head pads are located on the substrate to provide interconnection points. The intermediate strips have a plurality of electrically conductive pads with a hole therein, and each lead wire is electrically attached to a pad on the intermediate strip. Each intermediate strip is placed on the substrate such that each of the holes in the electrically conductive pads is aligned with one of the head pads on the substrate. An electrical connection is then formed between each head pad and a corresponding conductive pad of the intermediate strip.

Apparatus and method for enhancing the convective cooling of a voice coil motor (VCM) of a disc drive. A portion of an air flow established by the rotation of a disc of the disc drive is diverted from the disc and is directed through a channel to the VCM. In one embodiment, an air foil is provided to support first and second magnetic paths of the VCM, the air foil having a shroud surface adjacent portions of the circumference of the disc and a diverter surface angularly extending from the shroud surface, the diverter surface diverting the air to the VCM. Alternatively, a base deck of the disc drive is provided with a shroud circumferentially adjacent portions of the disc and the channel extends through the shroud to direct the air from the disc to the VCM.

Apparatus and method for measuring the maximum static friction force and the kinetic friction force between the heads of a disc drive and discs adjacent the heads. The disc drive is rotated by a computer controlled spin-up motor which provides constant angular acceleration of the disc drive. Voltages at the ends of the windings of a spindle motor of the disc drive are sampled to detect the angular acceleration at which disc rotation relative to the heads begins, from which the static friction force and the kinetic friction force are determined. The angular acceleration of the disc drive is monitored through the sampling of velocity commands used to control the angular acceleration of the disc drive, or through the use of an accelerometer mounted with respect to the disc drive.

An apparatus connects a flexible circuit to an actuator arm of a disc drive. The actuator arm supports a transducer head assembly, and the flexible circuit includes an electrical circuit supporting structure supporting a first electrical circuit coupled to the transducing head assembly. The apparatus comprises a solder joint. In one embodiment, the solder joint comprises a pin, respective first and second pin receiving holes in the actuator arm and supporting structure, and a solder connection between the pin and the supporting structure. Connecting the flexible circuit to the actuator arm entails inserting the pin through the second pin receiving hole, press-fitting the pin into the first pin receiving hole, and soldering it to the supporting structure. Another embodiment includes a solder connection between a ground plane on the supporting structure and the pin.

Method of electrically connecting a transducer to a preamplifier

A transducer signal terminator for providing electrical connections between a plurality of read/write transducer lead wires and a preamplifier includes a substrate having a plurality of layers and has a plurality of intermediate strips attached to the substrate. A plurality of head pads are located on the substrate to provide interconnection points between the lead wires and the substrate. Each intermediate strip is placed on the substrate such that each of a plurality of holes therein is aligned with one of the head pads on the substrate. An electrical connection is then formed between each head pad and a corresponding conductive pad of the intermediate strip.

Apparatus for supporting transducer heads of a hard disk drive wherein the heads are mounted on transducer support arms that are, in turn, mounted on extensive fingers formed on an actuator that moves the heads across surfaces of data storage disks. Two holes are formed through each finger to form two coaxial sets of holes on the actuator body and one hole in each finger receives a tubular boss formed about one of two equally spaced holes formed through one end of each support arm each arm. Bosses inserted into coaxial holes in the fingers extend thereinto from the same direction and are swaged to fix the support arms to the actuator by passing a ball through the bosses from the opposite direction. The support arms are constructed by spot welding swage plates, each having two holes formed therethrough and having a boss about one hole, to leaf members, similarly having two holes formed therethrough, whereon the transducer heads are mounted.
