Embodiments of a curved glass article are disclosed. The article includes a glass sheet having a first major surface and a second major surface opposite to the first major surface. The second major surface defines a first curvature of the glass sheet. The article also includes a display bonded to the second major surface of the glass sheet using an optically clear adhesive. The display has a perimeter with a display edge proximal to the first curvature. The article also includes a bumper piece disposed at least along the display edge proximal to the first curvature and a frame bonded to the second surface of the glass sheet using an adhesive. The frame is disposed around the display and over the bumper piece. In the article, the adhesive has a first modulus and the bumper piece has a second modulus that is greater than the first modulus.

Embodiments of a curved display assembly are disclosed. The assembly includes a glass sheet having first and second major surfaces. The second major surface defines a first curvature of the glass sheet, and the first curvature has a bend axis. The assembly also includes a curved display having a second thickness between first and second display surfaces. The display has a display region and two overhanging edges adjacent to the display region and parallel to the bend axis. A first adhesive bonds the second display surface to the second major surface in the display region. A second adhesive is disposed between each of the two overhanging edges and the second major surface. The second adhesive has a higher elastic modulus than the first adhesive. The overhanging edges each extend a distance outside of the display area that is at least three times the second thickness of the curved display.

Disclosed is a method of forming a glass article. In the method, a mid-frame is adhered to a glass sheet in a flat configuration. The glass sheet has a first major surface and a second major surface opposite to the first major surface. The mid-frame is adhered to the second major surface of the glass sheet. The glass sheet and mid-frame are bent over a forming surface of a chuck so that the glass sheet is in a curved configuration. The forming surface includes a first radius of curvature of 20 mm or more, and the first major surface of the glass sheet conforms to the forming surface. A frame is attached to the mid-frame, and the frame holds the glass sheet in the curved configuration.

A method of controlling compaction including obtaining a plurality of sets of process conditions for a plurality of glass ribbons, measuring a compaction value for a glass sheet cut from each glass ribbon of the plurality of glass ribbons, correlating the compaction to the process conditions. The method further includes selecting a predetermined cooling curve including a plurality of cooling rates, modifying the cooling curve by varying cooling rates of the plurality of cooling rates, calculating a predicted compaction value for a glass sheet cut from a glass ribbon drawn using the modified cooling curve, and repeating the modification and predicting until compaction is minimized.

An apparatus for manufacturing a glass article includes a draw housing for forming a glass ribbon having a bead, a heating apparatus with a heat source for forming compressive stress regions in portions of only the bead of the glass ribbon, and a scoring apparatus that forms a score line on which the glass ribbon is broken to form the glass article.
