The invention relates to a Radiation Curable Secondary Coating composition for use on an Optical Fiber. The Radiation Curable Secondary Coating composition is a urethane-free Alpha Oligomer prepared by reaction of the following: (a) an acrylate compound selected from an alcohol-containing acrylate or alcohol-containing methacrylate compound, (b) an anhydride compound, (c) an epoxy-containing compound, (d) optionally an extender compound, and (e) optionally a catalyst. The invention also relates to a coated wire and to a coated optical fiber.

The invention provides an optical fiber coated with a Supercoating, wherein the Supercoating comprises at least two layers, wherein the first layer is a Primary Coating that is in contact with the outer surface of the optical fiber and the second layer is a Secondary Coating in contact with the outer surface of the Primary Coating, wherein the cured Primary Coating on the optical fiber has the following properties after initial cure and after one month aging at 85&#xb0; C. and 85% relative humidity: A) a % RAU of from about 84% to about 99%; B) an in-situ modulus of between about 0.15 MPa and about 0.60 MPa; and C) a Tube Tg, of from about &#x2212;25&#xb0; C. to about &#x2212;55&#xb0; C.; wherein the cured Secondary Coating on the optical fiber has the following properties after initial cure and after one month aging at 85&#xb0; C. and 85% relative humidity: A) a % RAU of from about 80% to about 98%;B) an in-situ modulus of between about 0.60 GPa and about 1.90 GPa; andC) a Tube Tg, of from about 50&#xb0; C. to about 80&#xb0; C.

A Radiation Curable Coating composition, which may be used as an inner primary coating, an outer primary coating, single coats, a matrix, or a buffer resin composition, comprising: A Radiation Curable Coating composition, which may be used as an inner primary coating, an outer primary coating, single coats, a matrix, or a buffer resin composition, comprising at least one radiation-curable oligomer wherein said at least one radiation curable oligomer is a fatty-acid modified epoxy acrylate; at least one ethylenenic unsaturated reactive diluent; wherein said oligomer(s) and diluent(s) are selected from the group that does not include moieties with Urethane chemistry. This composition, when tested, is found to have resistance to thermal degradation as measured by less than 10% weight loss after exposure of cured specimens in a natural convection furnace for 100 hours at 180&#xb0; C.
