Apparatuses include, among other components, a pair of opposing drive rollers, a pair of opposing idle rollers, and a rotatable support operatively connected to the axles of the idle rollers. Axles of the drive rollers and the idle rollers are positioned along a circle. The axles of the drive rollers and the idle rollers alternate along the circle. Also, rotation of the rotatable support moves the idle rollers along the circle until the idle rollers contact the drive rollers. Each of the idle rollers is positioned by the rotatable support to only contact a single drive roller at a time.

An additive manufacturing system has a controller configured to operate a spool valve to open and close nozzles in a multi-nozzle extruder while the extruder moves in an X-Y plane and rotates about an axis perpendicular to the XY plane to form swaths in the X-Y plane. The controller operates one actuator to rotate the multi-nozzle extruder so a longitudinal axis of a nozzle array in the extruder remains perpendicular to a movement path for the extruder and to operate another actuator to move a cylindrical member of the spool valve.

Multi-nozzle extruder and method for operating a multi-nozzle extruder during additive manufacturing

A three-dimensional (3D) metal object manufacturing apparatus is equipped with a wire detector to determine a position of a top surface of melted metal contained in a receptacle of a heated vessel in the apparatus from time to time. The solid metal wire being fed into the heated vessel is retracted and the length of the retracted wire is determined using a signal generated by the wire detector. The determined length of the wire is used to identify the position of the top level of the melted metal in the receptacle so the receptacle can be replenished if the level has fallen below a predetermined capacity for the receptacle.

A method for direct transfer printing is disclosed. The method for direct transfer printing includes applying a fountain solution to an imaging blanket in a negative imagewise manner using an inkjet printhead, contacting the imaging blanket with a printing substrate, transferring the fountain solution from the imaging blanket to the printing substrate, contacting the printing substrate with an inking station, and depositing an ink film from the inking station to the printing substrate in one or more locations on the printing substrate where there is no fountain solution. A module for a direct transfer marking process and a direct transfer printing system are also disclosed.

Digital ink application module and methods thereof

A store profile generation method includes moving a mobile base around a product facility which includes an arrangement of product display units for displaying products. Product labels are associated with the display units. The product labels display product-related data for the displayed products. With an image capture assembly mounted on the mobile base, images are acquired of the product display units at a sequence of locations of the mobile base. With a computer processor, the product-related data is extracted from the acquired images and a store profile is constructed, based on the extracted product-related data, a spatial characterization of the image capture assembly, and information on the locations of the mobile base when the images were acquired, which indicates locations of the product labels throughout the product facility.

A system and method are provided for implementing relatively low temperature joining processes, including displacement/vibration welding techniques and/or heat staking techniques, in a process of building up laminate layers to form and/or manufacture three-dimensional objects, parts and components in additive material (AM) manufacturing systems. A multi-stage 3D object forming scheme is described involving steps of laminate cutting (with lasers or other cutting devices); laminate transport between processing stations (including using one or more of conveyors, robotic pick and place devices and the like); laminate stacking, clamping and adhering through comparatively low temperature welding or other mechanical joining (including displacement/vibration welding or heat staking); and mechanical surface finishing (via CNC machining or other comparable process).

Printing device and method of using the same

A system and method are provided for implementing a process by which printed rolls of substrate material web have additional material layers interleaved between the rolled material web layers to substantially eliminate back transfer or roll offset of printed images on the back sides of the rolled material substrates. In a process for pre-printing thermoforming grade plastic materials to produce rolls of substrate material for use in a thermoforming process, ink compositions, particularly adapted for the thermoforming process, are deposited on substantially continuous webs of substrate material. The webs of substrate material are then re-rolled with separate layers of low surface energy substrate material interleaved between the layers of the printed substrate material in order to substantially eliminate imaging defects produced by back transfer of printed images on to the backs of layers of the printed substrate material stored in rolls.

A laser imaging system and method. In an example embodiment, one or more laser diode arrays are associated with a digital micro-mirror device. A shutter-like device can be positioned upstream in the light path of the laser diode array (or arrays) such that the shutter-like device diverts energy out of the laser imaging system and away from the digital micro-mirror device during periods of extended non-imaging. A homogenizer module can be provided wherein the shutter-like device is located.

A store profile generation system includes a mobile base and an image capture assembly mounted on the base. The assembly includes at least one image capture device for acquiring images of product display units in a product facility, product labels being associated with the product display units which include product-related data. A control unit acquires the images captured by the at least one image capture device at a sequence of locations of the mobile base in the product facility. The control unit extracts the product-related data from the acquired images and constructs a store profile indicating locations of the product labels throughout the product facility, based on the extracted product-related data. The store profile can be used for generating new product labels for a sale in an appropriate order for a person to match to the appropriate locations in a single pass through the store.

An apparatus and method for printing directly onto print media including smooth non-absorbent media substrates (e.g., polymer films) inks having a wide range in viscosity, so that flexographic, gravure, and lithographic inks can all be contemplated. The proposed method is able to print with variable data/imaging. Dampening fluid may be patterned onto an imaging roll by coating the imaging roll with a layer of the dampening fluid and selectively evaporating off a patterned portion via a laser imaging device. The imaging roll then contacts the print substrate and transfers the patterned dampening fluid onto the substrate via film splitting. The substrate then passes through an inker station where ink is deposited directly to the substrate for attachment thereto except where rejected by the dampening fluid.

A thermal printhead (TPH) is positioned to selectively preheat a blanket surface such as an arbitrarily reimageable surface of a variable lithography system. A switchable mirror system and method includes a laser imaging module including one or more lasers and one or more DMDs (Digital Micromirror Devices), and a switchable mirror component located in a path upstream from the DMD (or DMDs) to direct a laser from the DMD when there is pause in a printing operation facilitated by said laser imaging module. A non-mechanical and electronic switchable mirror is thus located in the laser path between an LDA (Laser Diode Array) and a DMD to divert energy out of the system and away from the DMD during periods of non-laser imaging without reducing or power down the laser system.

A laser imaging system and method for printing includes a digital micromirror device and a switchable mirror element that acts as a clear lens element during the printing by the laser imaging system. A laser diode array provides a laser to the switchable mirror element in a laser path, wherein the switchable mirror element is located in the laser path between the laser diode array and the digital micromirror device to divert energy out of the system and away from the digital micromirror device during periods of non-laser imaging without reducing or powering down the laser system.
