An approach to seeker windows for aircraft comprises a window layer comprising an IR transparent material, the window layer comprising a first side and a second side substantially opposite the first side; and a heating layer on the first side or the second side of the window layer, the heating layer configured to apply a heating profile to the window layer to reduce thermal shock imparted to the window layer when the seeker window is exposed to hypersonic flight conditions.

The present disclosure relates to neuromuscular stimulation and sensing cuffs. The neuromuscular stimulation cuff has at least two fingers and a plurality of electrodes disposed on each finger. More generally, the neuromuscular stimulation cuff includes an outer, reusable component and an inner, disposable component. One or more electrodes are housed within the reusable component. The neuromuscular stimulation cuff may be produced by providing an insulating substrate layer, forming a conductive circuit on the substrate layer to form a conductive circuit layer, adhering a cover layer onto the conductive circuit layer to form a flexible circuit, and cutting at least one flexible finger from the flexible circuit. The neuromuscular stimulation cuff employs a flexible multi-electrode design which allows for reanimation of complex muscle movements in a patient, including individual finger movement.

Disclosed are methods of separating solute from solvent using a photoactive extractant. The photoactive extractant can be switched between two states by exposure to light. This can change the affinity of the photoactive extractant for either the solute or the solvent, causing absorption of the solute or solvent. The photoactive extractant can then be separated from the fluid stream containing the solute or solvent. The absorbed solute or solvent is then separated from the photoactive extractant. The photoactive extractant is a photoisomer. Applications for these methods include desalination, water purification, and metal extraction.

Photoactive separation of solutes

A supercapacitor-like device is described that uses a porous, conductive foam as the electrodes. After the device is charged, an explosive wave front can be used to remove electrolyte from the metal foam. This creates a large net charge on each electrode, which will readily flow through a load placed across the electrodes. The removal of charge can potentially occur on a time scale of microseconds, allowing a supercapacitor to be used in pulsed power applications. The creation of this net charge requires significant energy, meaning this concept may also be suitable for removing kinetic energy from objects.

In some cases, the particles contain a material that generated a gas which passes through a water-insoluble coating to create a void within the particle. Core annular flow is used to enable the subcutaneous delivery of a viscous fluid such as a protein therapeutic formulation. The high-viscosity fluid is surrounded by a low-viscosity fluid, and the low-viscosity fluid lubricates the passage of the high-viscosity fluid. This allows the use of protein formulations that have a higher concentration and a higher viscosity at comparatively reduced injection forces and reduced injection times. Several different embodiments of injection devices that provide core annular flow are described herein.

Modified carbon nanotubes and methods of forming carbon nanotubes

A method of employing an assembly containing a shelf-stable formulation for decontaminating skin exposed to nerve agents in a package forming a first chamber and a second chamber separated by a barrier with water located in the first chamber and a dry sponge and diacetylmonoxime or derivatives thereof, located in the second chamber, wherein the diacetylmonoxime is distributed within the sponge, the method comprising opening the barrier between the first and second chambers, shaking the package to move the water into sponge until the sponge is wet, tearing open the package, removing the sponge and wiping the sponge on skin. Preferably polyethylene glycol is distributed in the sponge and wiping the sponge on the skin leaves a mixture of diacetylmonoxime and polyethylene glycol on the skin.

Method for decontaminating skin exposed to toxic compounds

Light is transmitted through or from a separator of a battery cell or scattered within a battery cell and received by one or more light detectors. The light that is normally transmitted through the separator is scattered, absorbed, wavelength-shifted or otherwise distorted by an impending fault in the vicinity of or within the separator. The change in light due to the impending fault is measured by a detector and a signal from the detector is processed to identify the impending fault so that a warning can be generated indicative of the impending fault.

Optical monitoring of battery health

An assembly containing a shelf-stable formulation for decontaminating skin exposed to toxic compounds located in a package formed with water and potassium bicarbonate in a first chamber; and a sponge, diacetylmonoxime (DAM), and polyethylene glycol (PEG) located in a second chamber. The package includes a barrier between the first chamber and the second chamber, with the barrier being configured to be rapidly removed when needed to enable the water and potassium bicarbonate to enter the second chamber. The package is made by placing the water and potassium bicarbonate in the first chamber of a package; mixing the DAM with PEG to form a DAM:PEG mixture; infusing the sponge with the DAM:PEG mixture to distribute DAM within the sponge; and placing the sponge, DAM and PEG in a second chamber of the package. Infusing the sponge includes solubilizing the DAM:PEG mixture in ethanol or another low boiling point solvent to form an ethanol-DAM-PEG solution and applying the ethanol-DAM-PEG solution evenly to the sponge. The ethanol is removed by applying heat and/or vacuum to the sponge.
