A multi-window user interface (UI) is presented in various configurations and operational uses to leverage the relatively large display canvas afforded by large screen display devices such as 4K or 8K displays. Along with the various 'Multiview' aspects, content delivery techniques, content selection techniques, and level of service techniques also are presented.

Multiview as an application for physical digital media

An electronic device including a display device configured to render first content. The electronic device is communicably coupled to the display device and controls one or more imaging devices to receive one or more images from the one or more imaging devices. The electronic device further determines a first position of one or more living objects within a pre-defined region from the display device, based on the received one or more images and the rendered first content. The electronic device further controls an orientation of the display device towards the determined first position of the one or more living objects.

Embodiments generally provide television controller functions using head movements. In some embodiments, a method includes recording a motion of a user. The method further includes determining one or more characteristics of the motion of the user. The method further includes generating a motion identifier based on the one or more characteristics. The method further includes assigning the motion identifier to a television command for controlling a television function of a television.

An electronic device and method for personalization of curated offerings of a media application is provided. The electronic device selects a user interface (UI) element from a set of UI elements on a UI displayed on a display device based on a first user input. The selected UI element is associated with a media application accessible via the electronic device. The electronic device controls the display device to display a callout window within proximity of the selected UI element and within a display area of the UI based on the selection of the UI element. The electronic device selects a set of curated offerings of the media application based on user information and presentation metadata associated with the selected UI element and further controls the display device to populate the displayed callout window with a set of user-engageable items linked to the selected set of curated offerings.

JavaScript in a Multiview template adjusts playout of two AV streams of the same event from two buffers such that the two streams are synchronized on a display. The playout from one buffer is adjusted based on an observed difference between actual playout times of frames from the respective buffers with the same timestamps.

An electronic device and method are provided for display of a programming guide for content associated with broadcaster and VOD applications. The electronic device receives a DTV signal that include programming content items associated with broadcaster applications on the electronic device and extracts a set of in-band metadata associated with programming content items. The electronic device selects a set of VOD assets offered by at least one VOD application on the electronic device and extracts a set of out-of-band metadata associated with the programming content items and the selected set of VOD assets from at least one metadata source. The electronic device parses the set of in-band metadata and the set of out-of-band metadata and combines such parsed sets of metadata into a unified metadata file based on a master template. Based on the unified metadata file, the electronic device controls a display device to render a programming guide.

Unified programming guide for content associated with broadcaster and VOD applications

Techniques are described for expanding and/or improving the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 television protocol in robustly delivering the next generation broadcast television services. Broadcaster non-real time (NRT) data packets are downloaded into RAM memory first and then saved to disk once the complete NRT package is in RAM. Old saved NRT data is retained until channel change with new NRT data, at which point old NRT data may be deleted before starting to save the new oncoming NRT data. Old NRT data may be deleted only when the new oncoming NRT data is not the same as the old.

Techniques are described for expanding and/or improving the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 television protocol in robustly delivering the next generation broadcast television services. XLINKS are staged in successively faster memories of the receiver as ad insertion time approaches such that the entire segment can be viewed holistically and dynamically referenced, where all segment ads are available instantly when stored in SDRAM mode as compared to FLASH or coming from the Cloud. Each parsed item has its own timing to be synchronized with other DASH segment items for a single view experience.

Memory management of replacement content in digital TV system

A multi-window user interface (UI) on a control device such as a tablet computer communicates commands to a display controller, which may be implemented by a game console. The controller controls presentation on a large screen display according to the commands. The control device may always present a multi-window UI which the control device can command to have mimicked on the display, with the UI also being configured to cause a single video to be presented whole screen on the display while the multi-window UI remains presented on the control device. The video feeds that populate the multi-window UI are of the same content but of lower resolution than those which are presented on the display. A movable window on the control device can be dragged and dropped to cause a corresponding magnifying focus on the display over the corresponding portion of video in focus on the control device.

A visual component is added to a 3D audio stream to present on a display at the player side a visual representation of objects in the 3D audio, enabling the user to better understand what is happening in the 3D audio experience. The visual representation may include visual objects with the same location and movement in 3D space as audio objects being played.

An audio video device (AVD) is activated post-sale using an unlock code issued during the purchase. The buyer connects to his home network and enters the unlock code issued in the store at the point of sale. Then a server associated with the seller can complete the transaction and unlock the AVD for full functionality. In the event the AVD is reported stolen before activation, it can be blocked from use. When in the reduced functionality mode' the AVD can remain in demonstration mode or other reduced functionality state (e.g., only works with HDMI1).

Activating audio video device (AVD) functionality after point of sale

Indicators such as visible icons or other objects are presented on a display, with each indicator being associated with a respective profile that defines interactive events for which notifications are desired. Broadcast video is presented along with the indicators, and when an interactive event signal is received, if a profile indicates that a notification for that type of event is desired, the associated indicator is altered in appearance, e.g., by changing color, or motion, or other technique. If a profile does not indicate that the type of event should be notified, the corresponding indicator is not altered in appearance, e.g., can remain grayed out yet still visible.
