A process and apparatus (called Receiver Calibration) are described, that allows the determination of responses of a receiver to signals, the property values of which are known. The signals with known property values are supplied to the receiver via guided waves, i.e. in a controlled environment. The Receiver Calibration is suitable for calibration of a wide variety of devices.

Receiver calibration

A process and apparatus that are described measure characteristics of radiated waves in an uncontrolled environment. These measurements are useful for the design of communications installations (site surveys) among other signal measurement applications.

Radiated wave measurement with supporting calibration

A memory architecture for providing wide data words up to the width of the address word, or wider than the address word, without requiring separate groups of electrical contacts for data and address. A dynamic random access memory arranged within a package comprises a memory array of dynamic memory cells and a first plurality of electrical contacts of the package each adapted for conducting both address signals and data signals. An address latch is coupled with the first plurality of electrical contacts for receiving the address signals therefrom during an address cycle and coupled with the memory array for transmitting the address signals thereto. A write latch is coupled with the electrical contacts for receiving the data signals therefrom during a data write cycle and coupled with the memory array for transmitting the data signals thereto.

Memory architecture

Means and structure for encoding binary data ensures that, on average, the encoded data provides a balanced data stream having an equal number of logical one and logical zero bits. An indicator bit of known value is appended to N data bits, forming a group of N+1 bits. The polarity of this group is determined, i.e. whether the group contains more ones than zeros. The cumulative polarity of all bits sent over the communication link is also maintained. When the polarity of the group is the same as the cumulative polarity, all bits in the group are inverted and the inverted group is transmitted. Otherwise the bits in the group are transmitted in their original form. To decode the transmitted bits, the bit stream is framed to separate each series of N+1 bits. The value of the indicator bit on the receiver side of the communication link indicates whether the group has been inverted. If the group has been inverted, it is reinverted on the receiver side of the link to provide the N data bits in their original form. Conversely, if the group has not been inverted, it is not reinverted on the receiver side of the link to provide the N data bits in their original form. In alternative embodiments, additional bits are appended to the N data bits and the indicator bit in order to allow transmission of additional information.

DC-free line code for arbitrary data transmission

A method and an apparatus for communications systems provide priority to packets entering a communications node from a network to enable transmission of these packets in an orderly and efficient fashion. By defining a through-traffic preemptive priority mode, local packets are held in abeyance until packets which are already on the network and detected at the communications node have been routed through the node. Then the local packets are allowed to be transmitted from the node. And by defining a through-traffic priority mode, the local packet once started is completely transmitted before the network packets entering the communications node are allowed to continue through the system.
