A modular ruggedized protective case for a mobile communications device is disclosed. In embodiments, the protective case includes a flexible (e.g., rubberized) primary housing partially enclosing the mobile device and itself partially surrounded or enclosed by a rigid secondary housing. The secondary housing includes port protectors for concealing or shielding connector ports (e.g., USB, HDMI, AC, other like power/data inputs) of the mobile device. The protective case includes an adapter for a type cover keyboard, e.g., capable of partially covering the display surface of the mobile device when closed and serving as a keyboard or other input device when opened; the type cover adapter attached to a connection port and provides for transmission of control input from the type cover to the mobile device when the mobile device is enclosed in the protective case.

A ruggedized triggering handle device for a mobile scanning system supports a mobile device (tablet, smartphone) attachable by a bracket on the upper surface of the handle. The handle may establish a wireless link to the mobile device; a trigger of the handle device includes a magnetic switch which, when driven proximate to a triggering element enclosed within the handle, causes the triggering element to transmit key codes and instructions via the wireless link, enabling the user to trigger applications and peripheral sensing components (e.g., readers, scanners, imagers) of or proximate to the mobile device via the handle. The peripheral sensing components may be modular elements attachable between the upper and lower portions of the handle device, either individually or serially as needed, and operable via the trigger or the additional buttons without the need for visual reference to the handle.

Mobile device case

A system for volume dimensioning via two-dimensional (2D)/three-dimensional (3D) sensor fusion, based in a tablet, phablet, or like mobile device, is disclosed. The mobile device includes a 2D imager for capturing an image stream of its field of view (FOV), the FOV including target objects. The mobile device includes a 3D imager for collecting 3D imaging data of the FOV including point clouds of each target object within the FOV. Processors of the mobile device positively identify a particular target object by correlating the 2D and 3D image streams and generating a holographic model of the target object overlaid on the video stream, with adjustable surface, edge, and vertex guides. The processors determine the precise dimensions of the target object by measuring the holographic model, and detect and decode object identifiers (2D or 3D) on the surface of the target object to acquire and supplement object data.

An isolating connector device for connecting a mobile device to a vehicle-based network or device while protecting the mobile device from shock or impact to the vehicle includes a nearside housing and farside housing connected by a shielded cable, the farside housing engaging with the vehicle-based network via USB or cable port. The nearside housing is dockable to the mobile device via 10-pin or like docking connector. The nearside housing also includes embedded magnets and spring-loaded guide pins to removably secure the nearside housing to the mobile device or its protective case and maintaining the docking connection. The nearside housing includes LEDs or like visual indicators of charging or data links provided to the mobile device via the docking connection.

A system and related methods for volume dimensioning may be implemented by a smartphone, pad, tablet, or similar mobile computing device configured with a three-dimensional imaging system. The system may recognize the edges and corners of an object and infer its dimensions, from which a volume and dimensional weight can be calculated. The system may utilize the determined dimensions to allocate shipping resources to most efficiently and safely transport a shipment through a supply chain, assess damage to an object, assess the compliance of carry-on baggage to size requirements, and quickly assess the stocking of a retailer's and a competitor's products.

In a first aspect, embodiments of the inventive concepts disclosed herein are directed to a ruggedized protective case for a tablet, smartphone, or other like mobile communications or computing device. The case may include a rigid inner housing shielding the reverse face of the mobile device and a flexible, rubberized outer housing including reinforced impact-absorbing corners. The case may include a kickstand/easel hingedly attached to the rear inner housing, positionable by a user for holding the mobile device at any desired angle to a substantially horizontal surface.

An apparatus for connecting a mobile device to a vehicle-based network includes a USB or similar accessory connector enclosed in a protective housing. The connector housing may include a Bluetooth or similar wireless connector for establishing a wireless link between the mobile device and the vehicle-based network via the USB port. The connector housing may include a hinged panel allowing access to the USB connector while open, and securing the USB connector to a USB port of the mobile device while closed. The connector housing may include a flexible impact absorber for isolating the connector from shocks or vibrations conducted by the vehicle mount by which the mobile device is mounted to a dashboard or interior surface of the vehicle.

A ruggedized mobile computing device is enclosed by a multi-layer housing providing protection of the device and its individual components (e.g., processors, sensors, touchscreens, peripheral devices and ports) from wear and tear, impact shock, and extreme weather conditions. The mobile device may be rechargeable via a resonant charging receiver connectable to a companion resonant charging transmitter housed in a vehicle cradle or mount, to which the mobile device can be removably mounted for hands-free use or use in a motor vehicle. The mobile device may incorporate scanners, cameras, sensors, and other peripheral devices, and further connect to additional external scanners, sensors, or input devices through its peripheral ports.

A mobile computing device is configured to detachably mount on an adjustable dock and couple and communicate with a keyboard I/O device and a communication portion when mounted on the dock. The dock is configured to support the computing device, keyboard, and communication portion as well as secure the apparatus to a base via a ball mount. Corner protectors are configured to protect the mobile computing device as well as couple to shoulder straps and a palm cover configured to secure to the hand of an operator. Detachable fans configured to mount to the computing device are powered and controlled by the computing device.
