A single dissolving compound forms plural azeotropes, which can be azeotropically vaporized off at various stages of the treatment process, thus maintaining predictable concentrations of the chemicals present. The treatment process can be performed in the absence of formalin or related compounds which can interfere with the preservation of genetic material. A process for preserving a specimen includes using a dissolving compound that can form a plural number of azeotropes, at least one azeotrope being formed between one or more components of the dissolving compound and specimen-supplied water, and at least one azeotrope being formed between different components of the dissolving compound; successively and azeotropically vaporizing off formed azeotropes; and impregnating the specimen with a support medium.

Histological specimen treatment

Hardware accelerated synchronization of data movement across multiple direct memory access (DMA) engines is provided using techniques in which the order of descriptor processing is guaranteed for scenarios involving a single CPU and multiple DMA engines as well as those involving multiple CPUs and multiple DMA engines.

A bowling ball launcher has a frame and a rail oriented from a front of the frame to a back of the frame. A push pad is configured to slide along the rail. An elastic mechanism is coupled to the push pad and extends toward the front of the frame. A winch is coupled to the push pad toward the back of the frame. The winch includes a motor, a winch wheel, and a cable extending from the winch wheel to the push pad. The winch also includes a clutch between the motor and winch wheel. A shock absorber is disposed near the front of the frame. A plurality of position sensors is attached to the frame along the rail. A power meter is configured to move the push pad to one of the position sensors by operation of the winch.

Method and apparatus for processing tissue specimens against decomposition, putrefaction and autolysis which use a simple three step procedure in a single vessel or container. First, the specimens are saturated with a solvent mixture of a ketone and a hydrocarbon, e.g., an Acetone/Hexane or an Acetone/Xylene mixture, to dissolve lipids and other cellular solutes. The container is then flooded with melted Paraffin. In a last step, the solvent mixture is vaporized and evacuated from the container, allowing the melted Paraffin to replace the vaporized solvent and impregnate the specimens. Raw, i.e., non-processed and non-burred specimens up to 5 mm thick can be processed in about 60 minutes. A solvent regenerator distills the evacuated solvent; and converts vent waste gases into carbon dioxide and water through a thermocatalytic oxidizer.

Histological specimen treatment apparatus and method

The present method is capable of completely neutralizing the aldehydes in aldehydic waste waters within about 15 minutes and of producing a non-toxic waste water which then can be disposed of without fear of contamination of drain lines, etc. The method is carried out by contacting aldehyde-containing waste water with a sufficient amount of sodium pyrosulfite to completely neutralize the aldehydes in the waste water within about 15 minutes to non-toxic substances. The contacting is initiated without first adjusting the pH of the waste water and is maintained during the treatment period with agitation of the waste water being treated to assure full neutralization of all parts thereof. The sodium pyrosulfite and its reaction products are non-toxic. No hazard label is required for the sodium pyrosulfite, in contrast to certain conventional waste treating chemicals. The sodium pyrosulfite is a white crystalline powder easily stored, handled, weighed out and used without danger. The sodium pyrosulfite does not generate poisonous gasses, in contrast to sodium bisulfite which off-gasses sulfur dioxide when it is contacted with an acidic environment. The treated waste water in the present method has a pH of about 6-9 and usually is about pH 7 and is ready for disposal without safety precautions.
