A catheter and handle assembly for use in treating tissue. More specifically, the invention relates to a catheter assembly having an elongate shaft, ablation assembly coupled to one end of the shaft, and a handle coupled to the other end of the shaft. The handle facilitates both axial and circumferential positioning of the ablation assembly via the shaft in an airway, conduit, or vessel for treatment of the tissue. Embodiments include the use of a handle to facilitate the axial and circumferential positioning of the shaft and ablation assembly through and independent of a working channel of a bronchoscope during treatment for pulmonary disease like COPD and asthma.

Catheter and handle assembly, systems, and methods

A pulmonary treatment catheter and handle system including a catheter assembly with insertion tube coupled to a handle assembly. The system is further removably coupleable to a delivery device, such as a flexible bronchoscope or endoscope, having a port for coupling the handle assembly thereto, and a working channel in communication with the port for delivering the catheter assembly through the delivery device and into a body lumen. Optionally, a port channel of the port can be collinear with the working channel of the delivery device. The catheter assembly, handle assembly, and delivery device cooperate together to facilitate delivery and positioning of a catheter electrode in a treatment site, such as an airway, conduit, or vessel for treatment of the tissue, while minimizing damage to portions of the catheter assembly, the delivery device, or both.

A pulmonary treatment system includes a compact configuration for delivery to an airway of a patient. An energy delivery system of the pulmonary treatment system delivers ultrasound energy to target nerve tissue in or along an airway wall of the airway radially outward from surface tissue to reduce airway resistance in a downstream airway. The pulmonary treatment system may protect tissue in the airway wall of the airway located between the target nerve tissue and the ultrasound energy delivery system by a coolant system that may also act as a coupling fluid for the emitted ultrasound energy.

Medical devices using an expandable body to deliver a therapeutic agent. In one particular embodiment, the medical device comprises a tubular catheter and an inner expandable body (e.g., a scaffolding) contained within the catheter. The inner expandable body is connected to a core wire for advancing or retracting the inner body. The inner body may be advanced to exit out of the catheter or retracted to withdraw the inner body back into the catheter. This particular embodiment further comprises a sheath on the outside of the interior of the catheter. The sheath carries a plurality of capsules that contain a therapeutic agent. The therapeutic agent is delivered by pushing the core wire to advance the inner body, which expands against the sheath, causing the capsules on the sheath to be compressed against body tissue such that the therapeutic agent is released.

An apparatus for tacking a multi-lumen tubular assembly together comprises a laser, an optical member and a placement tray for retaining the tubular assembly. A portion of the optical member defines a window that is substantially transparent to laser energy emitted from the laser. The window has a substantially concave shaped surface. The placement tray and the window surface define a processing area for positioning at least a portion of the tubular assembly. The processing area receives the laser energy that is emitted from the laser and passed through the window of the optical member. The tubular assembly is defined by an outer tubular member disposed about at least a portion of at least one inner tubular member. The laser energy transmitted into the processing area is transmitted substantially through the outer tubular member and is substantially absorbed by at least one region of the least one inner tubular member.

Tacking method and apparatus

The present invention provides a catheter balloon having an advantageous cone design. In particular, the catheter balloon has at least one cone section with a volume in mmsuch that, when the ratio of one cone volume to the transverse cross-sectional area in mmof the inflated median section is at least about 2.1 mm. In certain applications, the advantageous cone design can assist in the preferential expansion of the cone sections prior to any significant expansion of the median section. The balloon can thus advantageously be utilized as a component of a balloon catheter or prosthesis delivery system, also provided via the present invention. When so utilized, the inventive balloon can assist in reducing any shifting of the balloon and/or prosthesis during inflation or delivery, respectively. Methods of utilizing the balloon catheters in dilation procedures, as well as the prosthesis delivery systems to deliver prosthesis, are also provided.
