Bone anchors and bone anchor insertion systems are provided that enable smaller bone holes for inserting a bone anchor by eliminating the need for a cannula. Smaller bone holes may help reduce patient recovery times. The provided bone anchor includes two flexible wings extending from a base portion that splay away from the base portion's central axis at rest, though may be bent towards or away from the central axis in response to an applied force. The bone anchor includes a drive feature that enables an inserter to couple and decouple to the bone anchor. A surgeon may drive the bone anchor through a bone hole via the coupled inserter while the bone hole maintains the bone anchor in a compressed state, and may decouple the inserter when the bone anchor is properly positioned, thereby eliminating the need for a cannula.

A nail for compressing two bone parts to treat bone fractures or osteotomies is provided. The nail has an elongate smooth portion and an elongate threaded portion that is constructed for generating axial compression along a length of the elongate threaded portion between two bone parts. The nail may also have one or more apertures for installing one or more crossing screws through the nail. An installation instrument particularly constructed to install the provided nail is provided. A first and second portion of the provided nail installation instrument may rotate relative to one another when a locking mechanism is disengaged, but are locked in position relative to one another when the locking mechanism is engaged, which enables installation of the provided nail.

Bone fixation systems and nail having compressive threading

The present disclosure provides medical instruments and medical instrument components having targeted torsional failure. Such targeted torsional failure helps prevent a surgeon from applying excessive torque that may damage an implant or bone, and also helps avoid the problems and complications that arise when medical instruments break within patients during surgical procedures. To provide such targeted torsional failure, the disclosed medical instrument components include a breakaway section designed so that the component breaks at a desired amount of torque, at a desired location, and in a desired way. The provided medical instrument components may also include a sleeve to increase side-loading strength that may otherwise be reduced due to the breakaway section. The increased side-loading strength may help prevent accidental bending-type failures. The presently disclosed medical instrument component therefore provides targeted torsional failure without sacrificing side-loading strength.

Adjustable bone plates

System, including apparatus and methods, for bending a bone fixation device, such as a bone plate during a surgical procedure. In some embodiments, the system may include an instrument having (a) a clamp with jaws and (b) a graspable handle portion that is manipulable while a bone plate is located between the jaws to bend the bone plate by application of pressure with the jaws at alternating positions along the bone plate. The clamp may allow the bone plate to be reoriented from an orientation for in-plane bending to an orientation for out-of-plane bending, and vice versa, while the bone plate remains between the jaws.

Instrument for bending a bone fixation device

System, including methods, devices, and kits, for hip fixation. The system may include a fixation element configured to be placed obliquely into a proximal femur and anchored in a head of the proximal femur. The system also may include a plate member including (a) a mounting portion configured to be placed on and attached to a lateral cortex of the proximal femur and (b) a barrel portion configured to be placed into a lateral region of the proximal femur and positioned around a portion of the fixation element. The system further may include a compliant member positioned or positionable at least partially in the plate member and configured to be reversibly deformed in response to a load applied to the head of the proximal femur, to change an angular orientation of the fixation element with respect to the plate member.

Plate-based compliant hip fixation system

System, including methods, devices, and kits, for hip fixation. The system may include a support member defining an aperture and including an intramedullary nail for a proximal femur or a plate member for a proximal femur. The system also may include a fixation element having a compliant region and configured to be received in the aperture of the support member such that the fixation element extends out of the support member from the aperture and into a head of the proximal femur and is slideable with respect to the support member along a long axis defined by the fixation element. The system further may include a set of stiffening inserts each insertable into the fixation element and configured to stiffen the compliant region differently from one another.

Hip fixation system with a compliant fixation element

System, including methods, devices, and kits, for hip fixation. The system may comprise an intramedullary nail configured to be placed longitudinally into a proximal femur. The system also may comprise a fixation element configured to be placed transversely through the nail, such that the fixation element is slideable along its long axis in the nail and extends out of the nail to a head of the proximal femur and is anchored in the head. A compliant member may be located in the nail and configured to deform reversibly in response to a load applied to the head of the proximal femur after placement of the fixation element, to reversibly change an angular orientation of the fixation element with respect to the nail.

Nail-based compliant hip fixation system

Device for fixing bone. In some embodiments, the device may comprise a plate member and a pair of hooks members. The plate member may have a pair of opposing edges arranged opposite each other. The pair of hook members each may project from a position adjacent the same edge of the plate member, to form a space to receive a same bone between the plate member and each of the hook members. Both hook members may be configured to contact a same side of the same bone. The plate member and a hook member may define first and second aligned apertures. The device also may comprise a fastener configured to extend from the first aperture, through the bone, and into locked engagement with the second aperture.

A method of bone fixation. A guide device may be disposed such that a first portion of the guide device is disposed longitudinally in a medullary canal of a bone and such that a second portion of the guide device is disposed outside the bone and defines a transverse path across the bone and intersecting the medullary canal. A transverse hole may be formed in the bone along the transverse path, and a fastener may be disposed in the transverse hole. A rod may be placed longitudinally in the medullary canal such that a threaded portion of the rod enters an aperture of the fastener and engages the fastener at the aperture to lock the rod to the fastener. The first portion of the guide device may be removed from the medullary canal after the step of forming a transverse hole and before the step of placing a rod.

Rod-based system for bone fixation

System, including methods, apparatus and components thereof, and kits, for connecting to bone using an anchor element configured to be anchored in bone and having a selectively bendable hinge region. In some embodiments, the system may connect the anchor element to connective tissue, a bridge member, and/or to another anchor element by bending the hinge region while the anchor element is disposed in bone, thereby connecting bone to the connective tissue or bridge member, and/or connecting bone members.
