A filter making apparatus includes a positioning device having a passageway therethrough, with the passageway guiding a continuous flavor element such as a continuous strand of textile material from an inlet of the passageway to an outlet of the passageway. A liquid flavorant is introduced into the passageway at a desired flow rate and the strand of material carries the supplied liquid flavorant out of the positioning device at a rate substantially equal to the desired flow rate. A portion of the passageway can form a bath of the liquid flavorant supplied to the passageway through a separate inlet at approximately atmospheric pressure. A portion of the positioning device guides the continuous strand of material through the bath, or guides the strand to pass along the bottom of the passageway, and the saturated or partially saturated strand of material then exits from an outlet of the passageway to a point in the path of filter tow material that is being converged to form a filter rod.

Method and apparatus for making cigarette filters with a centrally located flavored element

A system and process for monitoring a continuous element being incorporated within a cigarette filter includes a light source and a photoresponsive device facing each other and on opposite sides of a measuring gap, and passing the continuous element through the measuring gap and detecting movement of the continuous element by the effect of the movement on at least one light beam present between the light source and the photoresponsive device. Individual lengths of the continuous cigarette filter rod being produced can be selectively rejected based on a determination of whether the continuous element has a break or a knot along its length.

Process and system for monitoring a continuous element being incorporated within a cigarette filter

A dimple pattern glue roller functions to apply glue to the closure flaps of a partially assembled cigarette pack. The roller has an outer cylindrical surface, and a pattern of dimpled recesses in the cylindrical surface receive glue and apply that glue to the closure flaps prior to folding the closure flaps against the assembled cigarette pack. The glue is applied in an efficient and economical manner, and substantially less glue is required when compared to existing glue applicator constructions.

The main body portion has a main body chamber therein and dimensioned to receive a plurality of billed hats arranged in a shingled array. The back plate portion is pivotally connected to the main body portion and allows access to the interior of the travel case so that the plurality of billed hats can be inserted therein. The back plate portion further includes a form preserving means such as a reversed dome attached thereto. The form preserving means secures the plurality of the billed hats and ensures that their shape is maintained.

The present invention provides an apparatus and method of embossing a sheet of material with a background pattern together with additional selectable indicia, wherein the method comprises the steps of removably securing an indicia-bearing element to a first one of embossing rollers and removably securing a yieldable element to a second one of embossing rollers, passing the sheet material through the nip of rigid embossing rollers while synchronously moving the embossing rollers so as to impart a background, embossed pattern to a first portion of the sheet material and secondly imparting additional indicia to second portions of the sheet material by repetitively bringing into opposing relationship at the nip the indicia-bearing element and the yieldable element.

Apparatus and method for applying a fluid to a moving continuous web whereby fluid is collected and stored in a multichamber cylinder when application of fluid to the web is ceased, and substantially all of the fluid collected and stored is promptly and directly retrieved from the multichamber cylinder after application of fluid to the moving continuous web has recommenced. A storage chamber of the multichamber is sized to receive an amount of fluid such that the fluid level is below the bristles of an applicator brush.
