Access to a content selection may be regulated by accessing a medium associated with the content selection, identifying a profile associated with the medium, using the profile to analyze a content request with a multitiered rule base that includes two or more of a medium rule base, a media player rule base, and a host rule base, and enabling access to the content selection in accordance with one or more results of the analysis.

A method is provided for markerless injection of content into an augmented reality scene by use of a mobile device. Through the mobile device, a camera feed of a scene is acquired, which includes a flat surface. A key frame of the flat surface is selected from the feed. After determining that the flat surface in the key frame meets a predetermined level of feature richness, digital content is injected by superimposing text, graphics, video content over at least a part of the key frame. The digital content can be viewed and interacted with by the user of the mobile device. In one embodiment, the digital content is an advertisement.

A method and apparatus is described that prevents viewing or other type of playback of unauthorized copies of media files, whether received through a network or retrieved from a magnetic or optical disc. The apparatus uses data in a metadata field that forms a part of the media files. Viewing or playback is allowed only if the data meets certain predetermined criteria. An apparatus is also provided that can be used to generate a new metadata field if a media file has a metadata field with unacceptable data.
