A screen includes a first set of louver members at least partially disposed in the screen and located proximate to a first side of the screen, and a second set of louver members at least partially disposed in the screen and located proximate to a second side of the screen. An observer on either side of the screen sees an image produced by light directed to that observer by that set of louvers on the same side of the screen as the observer. Objects on the other side of the screen from the observer are visible to the observer between the louvers.

See-through display

In a particular embodiment, a see-through display includes a screen having transparent layer of material with a front side and a back side. At least one plurality of shaped louver members is disposed between the front side and the back side. The plurality of the louver members allow transmission of a fraction of light through the screen with minimum scattering within a range of incident angles. The plurality of the louvers also redirect image signal light from an image source into a range of angles centered about a normal to the screen. The louver members combine the image signal light with the light emitted from background objects located on the backside of the screen. The background image light is transmitted through the display screen with minimal scattering. For embodiments providing two sets of louver members, the image signal light may be redirected to observers on either side of the screen, such that the observers may see each other as well as the intended image.

A field emission device, which among other things may be used within an ultra-high density storage system, is disclosed. The emitter device includes an emitter electrode, an extractor electrode, and a solid-state field controlled emitter that utilizes a Schottky metal-semiconductor junction or barrier. The Schottky metal-semiconductor barrier is formed on the emitter electrode and electrically couples with the extractor electrode such that when an electric potential is placed between the emitter electrode and the extractor electrode, a field emission of electrons is generated from an exposed surface of the semiconductor layer. Further, the Schottky metal may be selected from typical conducting layers such as platinum, gold, silver, or a conductive semiconductor layer that is able to provide a high electron pool at the barrier. The semiconductor layer placed on the Schottky metal is typically very weakly conductive of n-type and has a wide band gap in order to create conditions conducive to creating induced negative electron affinity at applied fields necessary to provide electron emission. One type of wide band-gap material can be selected from titanium dioxide or titanium nitride or other comparable materials.

Electron emitter device for data storage applications and method of manufacture

In a particular embodiment, the fractional coverage louver device includes a transparent layer of material having a first surface and a second surface parallel thereto. A plurality of louver members disposed within the transparent layer of material provide fractional reflective coverage across the width of the transparent material. The louver members are aligned to receive light entering the first surface at a shallow angle relative to the first surface and direct the light out the second surface at a high angle relative to the second surface, thereby increasing the angular viewing range. Transparent areas between louver members allow a portion of incident ambient light to pass through the louver device without being reflected back to a viewer. As such, the louver device has advantageous contrast properties.

Fractional coverage louver device for a light guide screen

In a particular, a high contrast projection system configured for front or rear projection includes a screen having a viewing side and a back side opposite thereto. The screen includes a transparent layer of material having louver members disposed therein to provide fractional reflective coverage across the width of the transparent material. The screen discriminates an image signal light from a source, such as a projector, from ambient light incident upon the viewing surface. The image signal light is redirected over a range of angles relative to a normal to the viewing side, while the majority of ambient light is directed generally toward the back side, for example passing through the transparent material between louver members. A light absorbing back panel adjacent to the back side absorbs the ambient light further improving contrast.

An ultraviolet emitter display apparatus includes a substrate layer, a pixel electronics layer positioned above the substrate layer, the pixel electronics layer including electronics to drive the ultraviolet emission display. Ultraviolet (UV) emitters may be located above the pixel electronics layer, where the UV emitters may comprise a layer of UV light emitting diodes (LEDs) or a combination of an electron acceleration layer and a UV emission layer. The design further includes a phosphor layer comprising a plurality of phosphor elements, either white phosphor elements in combination with color filters or color phosphor elements.

A method of making a louver device for a light guide screen. More specifically, in a specific embodiment, a transparent layer is provided. A plurality of similarly angled surfaces are established within the transparent layer. A display apparatus comprising a plurality of light guides and method for producing such an apparatus is disclosed. The display apparatus comprises a plurality of substantially totally internally reflecting (TIR) light guides fashioned to expand a small original optical representation from an input of each light guide to a larger optical representation output at an output of each light guide. Each of the plurality of substantially totally internally reflecting light guides is separated from other substantially totally internally reflecting light guides by a material having a lower refraction index than the core material.

Light guide apparatus for use in rear projection display environments

Electronic writing systems and methods are described. In one aspect, an electronic writing system includes an elongated housing, an inertial sensor, an optical sensor, and a tracking module. The elongated housing has an optical input. The inertial sensor is attached to the housing and is operable to generate data indicative of movement of the housing relative to an inertial reference frame. The optical sensor is attached to the housing and is operable to generate data from light received through the optical input. The tracking module is operable to compute relative displacement data from inertial movement data corresponding to data generated by the inertial sensor. The tracking module also is operable to detect at least one calibrated position from calibration data encoded in optical data generated from light received by the optical sensor.

Electronic writing systems and methods

Provided is a black matrix light guide screen display. In a particular embodiment, provided are a plurality of aligned light guides, each having an input end, a midsection and a magnifying output end. A black matrix material is disposed adjacent to the light guides proximate to the magnifying output ends. The plurality of aligned light guides are arranged into a plurality of light guide layers, each layer one light guide thick. The magnifying output ends of each layer are aligned in substantially contiguous parallel contact with interposed black spacers to provide substantially the same magnification vertically and horizontally.

Provided is a curved light guide screen. A plurality of vertically aligned light guides are arranged into light guide magnifying layers. Spacers are disposed between any two adjacent light guide magnifying layers, proximate to the magnifying output ends, to position the magnifying layers and define an orientation for the magnifying output ends. A curved viewing surface is defined having a concave, convex or complex curvature shape depending on the size, shape and positioning of the spacers. The spacers may have a variety of shapes, and may be flexible, semi-rigid or rigid. A case houses the light guide magnifying layers and spacers, as well as an image source and associated lenses. A related method of making a curved light guide screen is also provided.

Provided is a light guide display with a protective layer. The light guide display includes a plurality of aligned magnifying layers providing a viewing surface. Each magnifying layer includes a plurality of light guides, each light guide having an input end, a midsection, and an output end. The plurality of input ends are aligned. The plurality of output ends are aligned. A protective layer is coupled to the aligned output ends. An appropriate method of making a light guide screen with a protective layer is also provided.

Provided is a method of making a densely packed light guide ribbon. More specifically, in at least one embodiment, a first clad layer is deposited upon a carrier. A first plurality of spaced light guides are then provided upon the first clad layer. A second clad layer is then deposited upon the first plurality of spaced light guides. A second plurality of light guides is then provided between the first plurality of light guides. A third clad layer is then deposited upon the second plurality of light guides to form the densely packed light guide ribbon.
