Tomographic bright field imaging (TBFI)

A photoacoustic probe for port wine stain (PWS), burn and melanin depth measurements is comprised of optical fibers for laser light delivery and a piezoelectric element for acoustic detection. The probe induced and measured photoacoustic waves in acryl amide tissue phantoms and PWS skin in vivo. Acoustic waves were denoised using spline wavelet transforms, then deconvolved with the impulse response of the probe to yield initial subsurface pressure distributions in phantoms and skin. The waves were then analyzed for epidermal melanin concentration, using a photoacoustic melanin index (PAMI) related to the amount of laser energy absorbed by melanin. Propagation time of the photoacoustic wave was used to determine the depth of blood perfusion underlying necrotic, burned tissue. Thus, the photoacoustic probe can be used for determining PWS, burn and melanin depth for most patients receiving laser therapy.

A method for determining an arterial blood oxygen saturation level according to this invention includes measuring the light transmittance through tissue of light of a first wavelength and a second wavelength. A steady-state component of the measured light transmission is used to select an appropriate calibration curve. A pulsatile component of the measured light transmission is used to determine the arterial blood oxygen saturation level using the selected calibration curve. An oximetry system is also provided. An improved oximetry system is further provided wherein a plurality of light transmission measurements are used to determine a blood oxygen saturation level.

Adaptive calibration pulsed oximetry method and device

A imaging device includes a light source, a detector, and an optical polarization system for video imaging of superficial biological tissue layers. The device relies on taking a set of measurements at different polarization orientations so as to render a new image that is independent of the light reflected from the surface of a tissue sample and that is independent of the light scattered from deep tissue layers. The device may comprise multiple light sources or multiple light detectors. The light source may provide light in a variety of forms such as coherent light and modulated light. Optical devices such as beam splitters, lens and mirrors may be utilized to allow images to be acquired along different light paths.

A multiple diameter fiber optic device comprises one or more optical fibers that are used to irradiate light onto a tissue and to detect light back-scattered by the tissue wherein each fiber is used for both irradiation and detection. In the case of multiple fibers, the fibers typically are bundled together at the probe end of the bundle. The diameters and/or numerical apertures of the one or more fibers are selected to provide different sampling volumes within the tissue. More specifically, the diameter and/or numerical apertures of the one or more fibers are chosen to emphasize differences in light penetration into the tissue such that the diameter and/or numerical aperture of each fiber is related to the scattering and absorption path lengths in the tissue.

Multiple diameter fiber optic device and process of using the same

The laser optoacoustic imaging system described herein utilizes time-resolved measurement of profiles of laser-induced transient pressure (acoustic) waves. The pressure waves are emitted by acoustic sources preferentially generated in absorbing tissues of diagnostic interest. This technique allows visualization of absorbed light distribution in turbid, layered and heterogeneous tissues irradiated by laser pulses in vivo. The laser optoacoustic tomography can be used for the characterization of structure and properties of normal tissue, and for the detection of tissue pathological changes. The optical heterogeneities that can be imaged with the laser optoacoustic imaging system include abnormal tissues such as tumors, injured tissues, blood vessels and other layered tissues. Further, three dimensional images of organs and portions of organs can be obtained.

Optoacoustic imaging for medical diagnosis

A method and device are provided for performing intraluminal tissue welding for anastomosis of a hollow organ. A retractable catheter assembly is delivered through the hollow organ and consists of a catheter connected to an optical fiber, an inflatable balloon, and a biocompatible patch mounted on the balloon. The disconnected ends of the hollow organ are brought together on the catheter assembly, and upon inflation of the balloon, the free ends are held together on the balloon to form a continuous channel while the patch is deployed against the inner wall of the hollow organ. The ends are joined or 'welded' using laser radiation transmitted through the optical fiber to the patch. A thin layer of a light-absorbing dye on the patch can provide a target for welding. The patch may also contain a bonding agent to strengthen the bond. The laser radiation delivered has a pulse profile to minimize tissue damage.

The electromagnetic wave is guided by a guiding means. Detecting means are provided for detecting the wave. Focussing means are provided to focus the wave onto the target, at a specified depth, which is adjustable.
