Evaporative edge lithography of a liposomal drug microarray for cell migration assays

A method comprising the following steps: (a) contacting a topographically structured stamp to an array of spots comprising lipid ink on a palette to force the lipid ink of each of the spots into recesses of the topographically structured stamp, (b) removing the palette from the topographically structured stamp so that at least some the lipid ink from each of the spots is retained in the recesses of the topographically structured stamp, and (c) printing the lipid ink in each of the recesses on a substrate as an array of stamped spots using the topographically structured stamp to thereby form a patterned substrate, wherein the recesses have one or more recess patterns, wherein each stamped spot of the array of stamped spots comprises lipid multilayer structure, and wherein the patterned array is based on the one or more recess patterns.

Scalable liposome microarray screening

Provided is a device having one or more lipid multilayer arrays of lipid multilayer structures on a substrate. Each lipid multilayer structure encapsulates an encapsulated material that may be delivered to a cell that is in contact with the lipid multilayer structure to determine the cellular response of the cell to the encapsulated material.

Lipid multilayer microarrays and their use for cell culture screening

Described is a device comprising a substrate, and a quorum sensor array on the substrate. The quorum sensor array comprises quorum sensors that release signal molecules in response to one or more environmental signals being sense by the quorum sensors to thereby amplify the one or more environmental signals by causing a signal chain reaction in neighboring quorum sensors of the quorum sensor array. Each of the quorum sensors comprises a lipid multilayer structure. Also described is a method comprising providing data for changes in optical properties of at least part of the quorum sensor array in response to exposing the quorum sensor array to one or more environmental signals, and determining the presence of the one or more environmental signals based on the data.

Semi-synthetic quorum sensors

A method for detecting the presence of molecules includes bringing into contact with at least one optical grating comprised of a first liquid phase, a second liquid phase which cannot be mixed with the first liquid phase. The first liquid phase is arranged on a substrate in a form of periodic structures having a periodicity ranging from about 190 nm to about 10 &#x3bc;m. The molecules to be detected, which are capable of changing the optical characteristics of the at least one optical grating are added to the first liquid phase or to the second liquid phase either before, during or after the bringing step. The presence of molecules is detected by measuring a changed reflection or transmission of light at the at least one optical grating or a changing spatial course of the diffraction pattern as soon as the first liquid phase makes contact with the second liquid phase and with the molecules to be detected.

Method for demonstrating the presence of molecules by means of optical gratings

Better patterning methods, including for better methods for forming biomolecular arrays, including a method comprising: providing a tip and a substrate surface, disposing a patterning composition at the end of the tip, depositing at least some of the patterning composition from the tip to the substrate surface to form a deposit disposed on the substrate surface, wherein the patterning composition comprises at least one lipid, optionally at least one solvent, and at least one patterning species different from the lipid and the optional solvent. The lipid can be a phospholipid such as DOPC. The patterning species can be an oligonucleotide or a protein. Microarrays and nanoarrays can be prepared including nanoscale resolution of deposits. The lipid can activate patterning or increase the rate of patterning. Simplified tip preparation can be achieved. Nanoscopic, SPM, and AFM tips can be used.

Patterning with compositions comprising lipid

A method for applying membrane lipids to a substrate includes providing a substrate and an ink reservoir having an ink including a membrane lipid. The tip of a scanning probe microscope is dipped into the ink so as to dispose the membrane lipid on the tip. The tip of the scanning probe microscope is brought into contact with a surface of the substrate. The tip is moved over regions of the surface so that the membrane lipid migrates from the tip of the scanning probe microscope onto the surface of the substrate in the regions and the membrane lipid organizes itself in the regions in a form of a single lipid layer or in a form of one or a plurality of mutually superposed lipid bilayers. The tip is removed from the surface of the substrate.

Method of applying membrane lipids to a substrate

Massive parallel printing of structures and nanostructures, including lipids, at high speed with high resolution and high quality using two dimensional arrays comprising cantilevers and tip-based transfer of material to a surface. The invention provides a nanolithographic method comprising (1) providing a two-dimensional array of a plurality of cantilevers, wherein the array comprises a plurality of base rows, each base row comprising a plurality of cantilevers extending from the base row, wherein each of the cantilevers comprising tips at the cantilever end away from the base row; wherein the two dimensional array has a support; (2) providing a patterning composition, wherein the composition comprises one or more lipids; (3) providing a substrate; (4) coating the tips of the cantilevers with the patterning composition; and (5) depositing at least some of the patterning composition from the tips to the substrate surface.
