The present invention provides for quick and efficient searching. One embodiment includes a first instruction configured to read at least a first search string and a second search string entered into a same first search field, and a second instruction configured to incrementally filter search results to locate at least a first document that has a least a first word that begins with the first string and a second word that begins with the second string.

Methods and systems for search indexing

Systems and methods enable federation of search results. An identification of a first data source associated with a first schema is received by the system, the first data source comprising data of a first type. An identification of a second data source associated with a second schema is received, the second data source comprising data of a second type, the second type different than the first type. An identification of a plurality of fields for a results set user interface, a mapping of the data of the first type to a first field of the results set user interface, and a mapping of the data of the second type to the first field of the results set user interface, are accessed. Data of the first type and data of the second type are merged and provided for display in the first field on a user terminal.

Apparatus and methods for locating data

Embodiments of the invention enable the efficient use of shared resources by different processes, such as background and foreground processes sharing a mass storage device. Thus, disk intensive operations, such as file indexing, do not unduly interfere with higher priority processes. In one embodiment, a first process is permitted to access a computer resource for a first predetermined time period. After the first predetermined time period has elapsed, the first process is inhibited from accessing the computer resource for a second predetermined time period. After the second predetermined time period has elapsed, a determination is made as to whether the computer resource is idle, wherein if the computer resource is not idle, the embodiment waits for a third predetermined time period and again determining if the computer resource is idle, and wherein if the computer resource is idle, the embodiment allows the first process to access the computer resource again.

Methods and systems for performing operations in response to detecting a computer idle condition

The present invention provides for quick and efficient searches over a network. In one embodiment, program and formatting code is transmitted to a client having a browser, the code generates in the browser a search mode interface including a search field, a list area for displaying a list of search result items, a view area for displaying contents of a selected search result item. The code detects changes search field changes, transmit change information to a remote search system, displays in the list area search results, including a plurality of search result items, received from the remote search system, and displays at least a portion of a first retrieved document in the view area in response to a selection of a corresponding item.
