The present disclosure provides, in certain aspects, unique methods and systems for connecting orthopedic components. In some forms, a male-type projection of a first orthopedic component is securely lodged within a female-type aperture in a second orthopedic component. In one embodiment, the projection, while received through a proximal entryway in the aperture, includes a first longitudinal region with deformed surface elements that provide a first securing zone within the aperture and a second longitudinal region with deformed surface elements that provide a second securing zone within the aperture. The first securing zone is located proximate the distal end of the projection, and the second securing zone is located proximate the proximal entryway of the aperture.

Orthopedic connections

A method for selecting modular neck components for hip implants based on independent variables associated with physical characteristics of the implant, including leg length, offset, and anteversion. During surgery, the surgeon may be confronted with a need to change a preoperatively-chosen modular neck. For example, the surgeon may desire a change in at least one of the variables, e.g., leg length, offset, and/or anteversion. The present method allows the surgeon to quickly and easily select a different modular neck based on an evaluation of one of the variables without requiring reevaluation of the other variables. The method may include preoperative planning in which a template including a grid coordinate system is used.

Modular orthopaedic component case

A protective sleeve is provided that is useful during minimally invasive surgery to facilitate assembly of modular components. The sleeve prevents contamination of a second component as it is engaged with a previously inserted component. The sleeve may also serve to guide insertion of the second component to facilitate aligning it with the previously inserted component.

Orthopaedic implant sleeve and method

Several embodiments of an implant sleeve are shown for use with implants inserted through a wound into a surgical site. In some embodiments, the sleeve is useful to protect mating implant components from contamination during insertion through the wound. In other embodiments, the sleeve is useful to clean components that have become contaminated during insertion.

The present invention provides an improved prosthetic stem for implantation in a bone. Specifically, the present invention provides a prosthetic femoral stem having a strengthening rib protruding from the substrate thereof and being flush with a porous coating formed thereon. The strengthening rib is advantageously positioned so as to increase the cross-sectional moment of inertia of the prosthetic femoral stem and thereby decrease the stress on the anterio-lateral surface of the femoral stem. A protrusion in accordance with the present invention may also be utilized with a prosthetic femoral stem absent a porous coating. In such an embodiment, the height of the protrusion is such that the protrusion will be surrounded by the cement mantle formed when the prosthetic femoral component is cemented in a femoral canal.

Prosthetic stem with strengthening rib

A wrench assembly used to restrain an implant while applying a torque to a portion of the implant. The wrench assembly conveniently restrains the implant relative to the torque whether the implant is implanted or not. In the case where the implant is first implanted, the wrench assembly guards against displacing the implant or splitting the bone. The wrench assembly includes a handle and a socket shaft depending from the handle in torque transmitting relation. A socket is coupled to the socket shaft in torque transmitting relation. The socket has an implant engaging portion for engaging the implant in torque transmitting relation. The socket further has a through hole aligned with the portion of the implant. A driving shaft passes through the through hole in the socket and engages the portion of the implant such that with the handle torsionaly fixed, the implant is torsionaly fixed by way of the handle, socket shaft, socket and implant connections. The driving shaft is movable relative to the socket to impart an opposing torque on the portion of the implant.

Wrench for an implant

An instrument for seating taper junctions of modular implants engages two components and provides a sustained assembly force along the junction axis with great mechanical advantage. In one embodiment the instrument comprises a lever mechanism for generating the mechanical advantage. In another embodiment, the instrument provides for an indicator of the amount of force being applied to the junction. In another embodiment, the instrument engages the components for such that both assembly and disassembly can be accomplished.

Assembly tool for prosthetic implant

The invention is directed to an alignment device for aligning a prosthetic hip stem implant with an opening formed in a proximal femur. The hip stem implant includes a landmark and the proximal femur includes a visual alignment mark. The alignment device includes an implant engaging portion configured for attachment with the landmark on the hip stem implant. The alignment device also includes a needle indicator connected with the implant engaging portion and having an end which may be positioned relative to the visual alignment mark on the proximal femur, thereby aligning the prosthetic hip stem implant relative to the opening in the proximal femur.

Rotational alignment guide for a prosthetic hip stem implant and method

An airfoil and its sub components for a gas turbine engine have a convex wall and a concave wall that are connected at leading and trailing edges. Internal supports extending from the convex and concave walls define a series of airfoil supports that have at least one primary cavity between them. Internal supports in the proximity of the edges define material absorption cavities that have a smaller cross-section than the cross section of the primary cavities. Pressure applied to the walls during the diffusion bonding process forces material inside the airfoil, and most particularly the airfoil edges, to yield towards the center of the airfoil. The material absorption cavities absorb material that yields during the diffusion bonding process and prevent buckling of the walls.
