A method of manufacturing a bearing for use in an orthopaedic implant, comprises the steps of: providing a radiation source; positioning a bearing material at a distance away from the radiation source; installing a shield over at least a portion of the bearing material; irradiating the bearing material through the shield using the radiation source; and forming a bearing surface on the bearing material.

Method for crosslinking UHMWPE in an orthopaedic implant

A suture anchor is described having a central shaft and at least one outwardly extending longitudinal rib. The ribs may have bone engaging elements such as threads or barbs on their outer surfaces. A bone boring tool having more than one set of sharpened cutting edges is described which creates a non-circular hole in bone approximating the anchor cross section geometry. The suture anchor is inserted into the shaped hole in bone and is rotated about its axis by the driver to engage the ribs with the bone.

Suture anchor installation devices and methods

A biodegradable device for repairing torn meniscal cartilage comprising a shaft and tissue gripping means at both ends. One end is adapted to pierce the tissue and the opposite end is adapted to fit a driver. The central portion of the device is essentially smooth along its length. The device has been subjected to a drawing operation after fabrication leaving the molecules in the shaft in a higher state of residual stress. When the device is exposed to an aqueous environment, the water absorbed by the polymer lowers the glass transition temperature of the polymer. Lowering glass transition temperature allows increased molecular mobility causing the device to contract. The contraction pulls the torn tissues into close apposition during healing. As the tissue heals, the tension is released by the polymer resorbing.

Tissue repair device

The present invention is directed to an acetabular cup prosthesis for implantation into a pelvic bone. A cup having a cavity for receiving a femoral head is formed of a polymeric material having a predetermined tensile strength. A backing is disposed about and attached to the polymeric cup. The backing has a porous construction defining interstitial pores, with the pores being sized to receive a portion of the polymeric cup therein and adapted for allowing ingrowth of the bone therein. The portion of the polymeric cup received within the pores results in an interface strength between the polymeric cup and the backing which is substantially equal to the tensile strength of the polymeric material.

Acetabular cup

A suture anchor comprises a shaft having a proximal and a distal end. A screw thread extends from the shaft and spirals from the proximal to the distal end. A cross-hole is formed through the shaft and the screw thread near the proximal end. The cross-hole receives a suture which provides a double end of suture to facilitate attachment of soft tissue. In a preferred embodiment, the shaft is tapered from a larger diameter proximally to a smaller diameter distally while the major diameter of the screw thread remains constant over most of its length. The suture anchor contains a driven portion which preferably contains a groove to conduct the suture from the cross-hole to the free end of the driven portion. A driver for the suture anchor having an engagement portion for engaging the driven portion likewise contains a groove so that when the engagement portion engages the driven portion the two grooves align to form an enclosed passageway for conducting the suture as the suture traverses the driven portion.
