A data storage device includes a housing in which is mounted a data storage unit, such as a hard disk drive. Pads serve as shock mounts at the corners of the data storage unit and separate the data storage unit and the housing. A flex circuit electrically couples the data storage unit and a connector at the front of the device. The flex circuit has, e.g., an 'N' shape configuration, which advantageously provides flexibility in many directions. The data storage device may convert the number of pin connections from the data storage unit to a different number of pin connections. A docking module that receives the portable data storage device may also convert the number of pin connections from the data storage device to a different number of pin connections used by a host system. The docking module includes a slide for receiving and ejecting the portable data storage device.

Data storage device

A data storage subsystem capable of withstanding substantial non-operating shocks and other rough handling includes a pads configured to mate to a portion of the periphery of a data storage device to provide impact energy absorption and well as noise reduction and thermal dissipation. A flex circuit connects the data storage device to a connection, and includes a plurality of slits to permit the flex circuit to have flexibility in two dimensions.

High impact-resistant data storage subsystem

A disk drive system provides a low height device by mounting a circuit board or boards containing the electronic circuitry in the same enclosure with the head-disk assembly (HDA). The drive actuator mechanism is positioned at one side of one end of the enclosure and the circuit board or boards are positioned at the other side of that end of the enclosure. A gasket seals the HDA from contaminants, while the enclosure protects the electronic circuitry and cables from physical damage, electrostatic charges and electromagnetic interference. The circuit board or boards can be removed from the enclosure without removing the entire disk drive from the using system, and the entire drive assembly can readily be removed from the using system for replacement or use in another system.

High capacity, low profile disk drive system

A docking module for removable disk drives provides, in one embodiment, space for two such disk drives within a standard half-height bay. The docking module provides cammed insertion and removal together with hot swappability of disk drives. The bay is provided within a housing member. A door is rotatably mounted on the housing member and configured to serve as a lever arm. An engagement portion for urging a disk drive into the bay protrudes from the door. A slide is mounted within the housing member and connected to the door such that rotation of the door causes the slide to move forward and back within the housing member. A tab on the inner end of the slide engages the disk drive to urge the disk drive out of the bay. Alternative embodiments provide ten or more disk drives at a density of two drives per half height bay.

Hot-swappable multi-cartridge docking module

A low profile disk drive assembly comprises an enclosure having a sealed volume substantially laterally displaced with respect to a circuit volume. The sealed volume has an extension which extends laterally toward one corner portion of the enclosure whereas the circuit volume is disposed substantially within an adjacent corner portion of the enclosure. The sealed volume contains one or more disks and a read/write head actuator assembly. A flexible circuit, which couples to the read/write head actuator assembly inside the sealed volume, extends from inside sealed volume, through a wall of the enclosure which separates the sealed volume from the circuit volume, across the circuit volume, and to an interface connector. The interface connector may be used to connect the disk drive assembly to a system with which the disk drive assembly is to operate. A multichip module is mounted on one side of the flexible circuit inside the circuit volume. Preamplification circuitry is mounted on one side of the flexible circuit inside the sealed volume. The flexible circuit, the multichip module, and the preamplification circuit may comprise a separately testable subassembly. In some embodiments, a portion of the enclosure is removable to allow access to the circuitry, such as the multichip module, mounted on the flexible circuit in the circuit volume.

Low profile disk drive assembly

A magnetic disk drive employs a head actuator structure in which the heads are angularly offset from each other around the disk surfaces. This permits the disks to be more closely spaced in an enclosure, thereby resulting in more disk capacity in a given disk enclosure envelope, or a decrease in the enclosure envelope required for a given disk capacity.

A bipolar magnet as used in magnetic disk drives is characterized by measuring field strength of the magnet along a plurality of radii using a Hall effect sensor which is incrementally indexed across the magnet by a stepper motor. The gap field strength, pole transitions, and null zone can be determined from combinations of the measurements along the plurality of radii.
