A gasket assembly and methods of construction and assembly thereof are provided. The gasket assembly includes an elastically deformable, resilient carrier layer having an upper surface and a lower surface extending in planar, generally parallel relation with one another between an inner periphery and an outer periphery when in a disassembled state. At least one top layer is fixed to the upper surface proximate at least one of the inner periphery and the outer periphery. At least one bottom layer is fixed to the lower surface in radially spaced relation from the at least one top layer. The upper surface and the lower surface take on a non-planar, spring-biased shape upon compressing the gasket assembly between a pair of surfaces to an assembled state.

Self-forming gasket assembly and methods of construction and assembly thereof

The gasket includes a gasket body which is made of a monolithic piece of an elastomeric material. The gasket body has an oil opening for allowing oil to pass between the timing chain tensioner and a cylinder head. The gasket body includes at least one outer engagement feature for directly engaging with an outer wall of the timing chain tensioner to hold the gasket body on the timing chain tensioner. The gasket body also includes at least one inner engagement feature for directly engaging with an inner wall of the timing chain tensioner to further hold the gasket body on the timing chain tensioner.

An engine includes an engine block and a cylinder head mounted to the engine block. The engine block includes a bore elongated along an axis and a liner disposed in the bore and extending annularly about the axis. The liner includes a seal surface and a fire dam disposed radially inward from the seal surface. The fire dam extends along the axis from the seal surface towards the cylinder head. The engine further includes a head gasket disposed between the engine block and the cylinder head. The head gasket extends endlessly around the fire dam. The engine further includes a shim seated between the seal surface and the head gasket and abutting the seal surface and the head gasket. The shim is disposed radially outward from the fire dam and extending annularly about the axis.

Combustion seal including cylinder liner and shim

An improved multi-layer gasket assembly is provided. The gasket assembly includes a plurality of metal gasket layers which have at least one set of axially aligned openings. The plurality of layers includes at least two functional layers, at least one distance layer and at least one stopper layer. Each of the functional layers has at least one embossment bead that is spaced radially from the openings, and the distance and stopper layers are sandwiched between the functional layers. At least one of the stopper and the distance layer has a polymeric coating applied to at least a portion of an exterior surface thereof, and the stopper and distance layers are laser welded together through the polymeric coating.

Multi-layer gasket assembly

An improved gasket assembly including a core layer and at least two facing layers disposed on opposite sides of the core layer is provided. The gasket assembly further includes first and second outer layers which are made of metal and are disposed on opposite sides of the facing layers from the core layer. The core, facing and outer layers all present at least one set of axially aligned openings. The first layer is bent towards the second layer by no greater than ninety degrees at the openings to present a first outer layer flange, and the second layer is bent by no greater than ninety degrees at the openings to present a second outer layer flange. The first and second outer layer flanges are in direct contact with one another to provide a gas tight seal around the set of axially aligned openings.

A multi-layer cylinder head gasket is provided. The cylinder head gasket includes a plurality of layers of material, each of the layers has a plurality of openings including at least one cylinder bore opening and at least one pushrod opening. Each of the layers has an edge which surrounds the at least one pushrod opening, and the pushrod openings of the layers are aligned axially with one another. An eyelet extends axially in each of the pushrod openings and covers the edges of the layers for protecting a pushrod extending through the respective pushrod opening. The eyelet is made of a material that is softer than the material of the plurality of layers.

A method of modifying a combustion seal of a diesel engine fitted with a cylinder liner having an annular top sealing ridge which is damaged or mispositioned so as to interrupt the combustion seal is provided. The method includes exposing the sealing ridge and, without removing the liner from the engine, clamping and plastically deforming a combustion seal shim against the sealing ridge to perfect the combustion seal.
