Generating a storage interface includes receiving a request for documents, detecting an accounting workflow type corresponding to request, and identifying a document organizational structure matching the accounting workflow type. Further, a virtual storage interface is built using an index on the documents and according to the document organizational structure, and presented.

Systems, methods and articles of manufacture for preparing an electronic tax return for a taxpayer which automatically access tax documents from sources of tax documents, such as financial institutions at which the taxpayer has an account. The system receives a request from a tax preparer for tax data regarding a taxpayer. The system analyzes a prior year tax return for the taxpayer and identifies tax documents used to prepare the tax return. The system identifies the source and the type of tax document. The system generates a request to the taxpayer to access the tax documents for the current tax year. The request allows the taxpayer to provide account credentials to access the tax documents from the source. The system accesses the tax documents from the source using the account credentials. The system converts the tax documents into a standard data structure which is automatically imported into a tax return.

A method for filing a tax form, comprising generating a basic return form, receiving a plurality of basic return answers to a plurality of basic return questions from a user, obtaining aggregate tax data from a plurality of filed tax returns based on the plurality of basic return answers, determining a plurality of aggregate tax questions based on the aggregate tax data, determining a plurality of utilization levels for the plurality of aggregate tax questions, generating a summary input form comprising a first plurality of tax questions and a second plurality of tax questions, receiving a plurality of summary input answers to the first plurality of tax questions and the second plurality of tax questions from the user, completing the tax form based on the plurality of summary input answers to obtain a completed tax form, and filing the completed tax form with a tax authority.

A method for obtaining data from a user includes receiving a row selection in an input grid, where each column is associated with one of a plurality of primary input variables, and where each row is configured to display primary data corresponding with the plurality of primary input variables, receiving a request to expand the row to display an input form, where the input form comprises a plurality of fields, where each of the plurality of fields is associated with one of a plurality of supplementary input variables, and where the plurality of fields are configured to display supplementary data corresponding with the plurality of supplementary input variables. The method further includes expanding the row to display the input form, obtaining and storing supplementary data for the input form, collapsing the row to hide the input form, and displaying a summary of supplementary data stored for the input form.
