Systems and methods are provided for reducing outage scope in cable networks with ideal taps. An ideal tap may have a plurality of ports that include at least an input port configured for receiving downstream (DS) signals from and transmitting upstream (US) signals to upstream nodes, an output port configured for transmitting downstream (DS) signals to and receiving upstream (US) signals from downstream nodes, and one or more drop ports for receiving signal from and transmitting signals to customer premise equipment (CPE) in the coaxial network. The ideal tap may further include one or more mitigation components configured for reducing scope of outage in the ideal tap, with the one or more mitigation components configured to, when an outage occurs in the ideal tap, provide or maintain inter-port connectivity within the ideal tap, the inter-port connectivity including at least connectivity between the input port and the output port.

Systems and methods are provided for utilizing low gain low noise signal amplification and ideal taps in coaxial networks. An ideal tap configured for use in coaxial networks may have a plurality of ports, one or more processing circuits configured for handling reception and transmission of signals communicated via the tap, and one or more echo cancellation circuits configured for providing echo cancellation during operations of the tap. The processing circuits are configured based on particular predefined tap performance criteria. The tap performance criteria may relate to one or more of port-to-port isolation, return loss, port-to-port gain, and up-tilt. The echo cancellation circuits may be configurable for providing the echo cancellation based on the tap performance criteria. The echo cancellation circuits may include an echo cancellation control circuit for controlling echo cancellation functions and/or operations. The echo cancellation circuits may include dedicated per-port echo cancellation circuits.

Methods and systems for utilizing low gain low noise signal amplification and ideal taps in coaxial networks

Particular embodiments provide an N+0 sharing scheme for networks. The N+0 sharing scheme includes no dedicated spare among a group of active elements. Each active element may provide service to a medium, which may be associated with a medium. When a failure to one of the active elements occurs, at least one of the working active elements takes the workload of the failed active element. The cost of N+0 sharing is a reduced per medium (e.g., service group) capacity during a failure. That is, some service groups may receive less bandwidth from the active element that is used in the sharing scheme to compensate for the failure. However, this may be preferable to service operators compared to the additional cost of including a spare for the group of active elements, or the complete loss of service that occurs when a failure occurs without a failure recovery scheme.

N+0 redundancy in a network access system

As the network demonstrates its continued stability by the addition of the new probationary flows, each probationary flow can be re-assigned its original priority thereby promoting the probationary flow to a non-probationary status.

Stateless admission control

Particular embodiments provide systems and methods to reduce the average power consumption per subscriber. Particular embodiments select windows of time when network components are under-utilized by subscribers of the network. During periods of under-utilization of a network component, subscribers may be consolidated onto a smaller number of network components by increasing the service group size. The consolidation increases the service group size, which has the effect of lowering bandwidth per subscriber. However, the bandwidth use per subscriber may be lower during this time. The use of the smaller number of network components allows the energy for these components to be used more efficiently. When the subscriber network demands increase, the distribution system places the network components into an active power state and redistributes the subscribers to the newly-activated components. This decreases the service group size, such as back to the original size.

Power efficiency improvement in network equipment using service group consolidation

A user device connected to a CMTS over a network is configured such that upon power-up it can use a universal broadcast SID or a predetermined multicast SID to obtain an initial maintenance during a maintenance window. The predetermined multicast SID is assigned to the device at manufacture based on the type, or class, of device. The CMTS to which the devices connect is configured to schedule exclusive initial maintenance opportunity windows for each type of device in addition to an all-inclusive, or open, initial maintenance opportunity window, during which all types of devices may attempt to register. The order and number of initial maintenance windows within a periodically recurring sequence of windows can be configured by an operator based on the types of devices connected to the network.

Method and system for prioritizing initial maintenance of cable modems

A token bucket instantiation regulate packets in a traffic flow stream based on a predetermined peak traffic flow rate. The token bucket size is nominally set to zero. An evaluation is made at a device that has received a given packet. The packet is considered conforming and is passed from the device if the token depth of the bucket is zero or greater. The token depth is decreased by the number of byes in the packet that was passed. The token depth is continuously replenished at a predetermined token rate until the predetermined bucket size is attained (the bucket is full). A received packet is deemed nonconforming if the token depth is less than zero; the non-conforming packet is not passed but is processed according to non-conforming criteria. Token bucket instantiations may be implemented in hardware, software or firmware for each traffic flow to regulate traffic to a given user.
