Coreless tissue rolls can be produced without having to use an adhesive to form a hollow center. Instead, moisture can be used to promote light hydrogen bonding between the layers of the tissue web that line the hollow center. The hydrogen bonding provides sufficient structure to maintain the shape of the hollow center without rendering the tissue web surrounding the passageway unusable. Passageways can also be formed in accordance with the present disclosure that are substantially circular so that the rolls will easily spin on a spindle. In an alternative embodiment, moisture is not used in constructing the wound tissue roll.

Coreless tissue rolls and method of making the same

Coreless rolls of tissue, such as rolls of bath tissue or paper towels, are produced by winding tissue logs on a mandrel having retractable pins. During winding, the pins extend and penetrate the first several windings of the log as it is initially wound, which prevents slippage. After the winding is complete, the pins retract to allow the tissue log to slide off of the mandrel for subsequent slitting into individual product rolls and packaging. The penetration of the pins into the first several windings of the log tends to mechanically entangle and structurally unify those windings to create a 'soft core'. At the same time, the properties of the tissue sheets within the soft core are the same as the other sheets within the roll and are therefore usable by the consumer.

Coreless tissue rolls

A winder for winding a web to produce a rolled product is provided. The winder includes a web transport apparatus that is used for conveying the web. Also included in one exemplary embodiment is a plurality of independent winding modules. The winding modules are independently positioned to independently engage the web as the web is conveyed by the web transport apparatus. The winding modules may be configured to wind the web to form a rolled product by center winding, surface winding, and combinations of center and surface winding. The winding modules are structurally and operationally independent of one another where if one module is disabled, another may still operate to produce the rolled product without shutting down the winder.

Center/surface rewinder and winder

A system for cutting cores used to wind up web materials or as a base structure for containers and other devices is provided. The system uses a core guidance tube in one aspect to position a continuously forming core while a laser beam is directed at the core to cut the core into desired lengths. A method for using the system is further provided.

A web cut-off assembly for a rewinder apparatus includes a bedroll having a pair of retractable bedroll blades that move to a protracted position to engage the web material for a web cutting event. A chopper roll is disposed proximate to the bedroll and includes a first blade and a second blade extending from a circumference thereof. The first and second blades rotationally intermeshing with the bedroll blades in the web cutting event. The second blade is configured to effectively stretch and hold the web relative to the bedroll blades as the first blade severs the web in the web cutting process.

Apparatus for web cut-off in a rewinder

A device including blades and pins is mounted for interaction with a bedroll for separating or cutting a web or sheet of material as the web travels around the circumference of the bedroll. The assembly comprises a clamp having a bottom side and a front side. Two blades having an upper surface and a lower surface are provided, with a blade spacer located between the blades, and operably connected to the clamp. A blade from a nearby chopper roll is adapted to engage the blades of the device to separate a sheet as it travels along the processing pathway. A unitary elongated mandrel that is fixed in relation to the blade, and configured to carry or move a severed web, is provided. The unitary mandrel employs a strut from which projections or pins extend in a line or row, the pins being adapted to pierce and carry the severed tail of the web to a core for gluing the tail to the core, followed by winding.

Apparatus for severing, carrying or winding a web

A method for directly forming and finishing a web product is provided. The method includes forming a web on a forming apparatus, continuously transferring the formed web to a conveyor, performing a converting step on the web as the web is continuously supported and advanced on the conveyor, and finishing the web into a product substantially ready for packaging. A system for performing the method is also provided.
