A method is disclosed for operating a user terminal, such as a cellular radiotelephone, of a type that is bidirectionally coupled to a network through an RF interface. The method includes a first step of storing at least one message in a memory accessible by the mobile station. A second step transmits a Teleservice origination (e.g., a SMS origination) request from the mobile station to the network using a reverse digital control channel. The request specifies that a reverse digital traffic channel be assigned to the mobile station. A next step, executed in response to being assigned to a reverse digital traffic channel, transmits the at least one stored message to a SMS center that is coupled to the network, the at least one stored message being transmitted over the assigned reverse digital traffic channel. In a preferred embodiment of this invention the SMS origination request is transmitted using a random access channel, the step of transmitting the at least one stored message includes a step of bypassing a voice coder and a data modem within the mobile station, and the step of transmitting the at least one stored message is accomplished in an ARQ mode of operation. Also disclosed is a method to deliver Teleservice messages in a wireless communications system that are not constrained by any message length limitations imposed by the air interface or network layers supporting the wireless service.

A long term average and a short term value of the strength of a received signal is used to determine a trigger condition in a mobile communications system to perform such functions as control channel or traffic channel reselect. The long term average removes the effects of short term fades in the short term signal that otherwise may cause a premature trigger decision. The short term value offsets historical bias that may be built into long term average. The actual trigger is only realized when both the long term average and the short term value exceed predetermined thresholds in a positive or negative direction.

A method is disclosed for operating a cellular communications system of a type that comprises a Base Station/Mobile Switching Center/Interworking function (BMI), a message center (MC), and at least one mobile station. The method includes the steps of transmitting a point-to-point message (e.g., a SMS message), or a point-to-multipoint message (e.g., a Broadcast SMS message), from the MC via the BMI to the mobile station; buffering an acknowledgement message in the mobile station when it is determined by the mobile station that the acknowledgement message either cannot be transmitted, or cannot be transmitted in its entirety; and then subsequently automatically transmitting the buffered acknowledgement message when transmission becomes possible. Also disclosed is a method for buffering user-originated SMS messages in the mobile station until the SMS message can be transmitted to the network.

Methods and apparatus for providing delayed transmission of SMS delivery

A micro-cellular radio communications system (microsystem) is arranged to re-use radio frequency channels which are assigned for use in a cellular radio system (macrosystem) in the same vicinity. The microsystem maintains a list of each frequency channel which is in current use in any microcell of the microsystem. In each microcell of the microsystem a signal characteristic, for example received signal strength, of each frequency channel, is repeatedly measured when the channel is not in current use in any microcell of the microsystem, and the measurements are used to determine a long-term statistical preference for re-use of a favoured set of the frequency channels in that microcell. For each microcell, the frequency channels in the favoured set are given a short-term order for actual use in dependence upon frequent measurements of the signal characteristic for the microcell regardless of whether or not the channel is in current use in any other microcell of the microsystem.

Selecting radio frequency channels for reuse in micro-cellular radio

A mobile communications system accommodating both expanded spectrum (ES) mobiles and non-expanded spectrum (NES) mobiles incorporates a first set of (ES) channels and a second set of (NES) channels. A proportion of the channel requests from ES mobiles are allocated to a queue for NES channels. NES channels are allocated to these ES mobiles until no further NES resources are available. Further requests from ES mobiles in the NES channel queue are then met by allocating available ES channels. This provides an enhanced efficiency of utilisation of channel resources. Advantageously, a subset of NES channels is reserved for preferential use by NES mobiles to ensure fair allocation of channels between the two types of user, these channels being allocated to ES mobiles only if no other channels are currently available.
