A data structure and associated data management methods for highly flexible storage of data for a wide variety of application programs. Data is stored as a plurality of Blops, each of which has a list of Properties associated with it. Each Property contains zero or more elements. Elements are Values, each of which has a Basic Type and consists of a variable length sequence of bytes. The Basic Type defines the format of the Value, as well as meta-information such as compression and encryption. Elements can also be Compound Types, which nestably refer to another list of Properties. Blops are stored in Containers, which map to the physical medium on which the data is stored. Containers associate respective Container Handlers which are specific to the Container's physical medium. Related Blops in a Container are organized into Pools of Blops. Each Container contains one or more Pools, each Pool having a unique name within the Container. A Pool contains multiple versions of a Blop. Versions of different Blops are grouped together in Layers in a Pool and each Layer contains at most one version of a Blop. Layers are related to each other as an acyclic digraph, where each Layer is above one or more Base Layers and has zero or more Layers above it. Each Layer presents a 'view' to a user of the Blops in a pool, and thereby provides a mechanism to manipulate which versions of which Blops are to be used at any given time.

A memory management system and method of managing a memory system are disclosed. The memory management system includes a plurality of physical storage media and a memory manager for generating virtual storage devices or 'stores,' with one or more first storage devices each having a corresponding first mapping plug-in, or device driver, associated with the plurality of physical storage media. Each first device driver scans its corresponding first storage device to determine its partitioning format and generates one or more second virtual storage devices from a partition map stored in the partitioning plug-in, or partition manager, associated with the corresponding first storage device, each second virtual storage device having one or more second partitioning formats, a second partition manager and second device driver. The first and second partition managers are independent of the first and second device drivers. The separation of disk driver and partition manager functions allows for the nesting of partition formats and avoids the replication of partitioning codes. The physical storage media may include at least one redundant array of independent disks (RAID), and the first device driver may be a small computer systems interface (SCSI) associated with the physical storage device.

A system for object oriented message filtering for selectively transferring a message between a client task and one or more server tasks for preprocessing, processing, and postprocessing comprises an object database having a filter object memory, an object management unit, a message transaction unit, and a locking unit. The object management unit creates a port object and one or more associated target message objects. The object management unit selectively creates one or more filter objects associated with a target message object, and selectively associates a preprocessor message object, a postprocessor message object, or both a preprocessor message object and a postprocessor message object with each filter object. The message transaction unit selectively routes a message sent by a client task and directed to a target message object to one or more associated preprocessor message objects prior to delivering the message to the target message object. After delivery to the target message object, the message transaction unit selectively routes the message to one or more associated postprocessor message objects. Server tasks receive messages from port objects associated with preprocessor message objects, target message objects, and postprocessor message objects, facilitating preprocessing, processing, and postprocessing operations.

System and method for object oriented message filtering

In a computer including at least one caller adapted to request access to a storage media, the storage media being organized according to one of at least one file system format, a system for handling requests for access to the storage media. The system includes interface modules for receiving a request for information from a caller, determining an appropriate one of a plurality of destinations to which to send the request based at least in part on a subject for the received request, and sending the request to the appropriate destination, format agent modules, corresponding to the file system format, for processing requests to access the storage media, a store for storing at least one first identifier for identifying the format agent modules, second identifiers for identifying the plurality of destinations, and mapping information for mapping between the second and first identifiers, and a dispatch module for receiving the request from the interface modules and forwarding the request to the format agent modules responsive to the mapping information. A method for handling requests for access to the storage media is also provided.
