A software management system of an intelligent power conditioner with backup system option employing trend analysis for early prediction of AC power line failure. An AC line power conditioner utilizing a microprocessor based control system for providing suitable alarms when an operating input AC line is defective or the trend of measured deficiencies predicts line power failure and for initiating an inverter control signal when an inverter module is attached as an option. The software controlled system analyzes the input and output voltages, provides analysis of input voltage surges and sags, measures transient amplitude and transient pulse width, counts glitches and dropouts, measures frequency, and identifies each defect and computes associated trends, stores all accumulated data in a Log Buffer for digital printout, and then provides appropriate alarms to a user. These alarms advise the user of imminent power failure and the need for an inverter module, if an inverter module, which can be attached by simple plug in, has not been attached thereto. If an inverter is unconnected, the addition of an inverter is suggested when defects are excessive, or when the trend indicates a higher than normal predilection to failure. A connected inverter module is activated when line defects prescribe such operation.

Software management of an intelligent power conditioner with backup

Instabilities in the output voltage provided from an AC power supply system connected to a power factor correcting load are suppressed by a stabilizer which is connected across the output lines from the power supply system to the load. The stabilizing apparatus includes a rectifier having AC input nodes connected to the power supply system output lines, and DC output nodes at which DC voltage appears. A capacitor and resistor are connected in parallel across the output nodes of the rectifier. During normal operation, where the peak AC voltage from the power supply system is substantially constant, the capacitor charges up to a voltage level near the zero to peak value of the AC voltage waveform, with the charge on the capacitor slowly dissipated through the parallel resistor at a rate that does not substantially dissipate the charge between peaks of the AC voltage waveform. When changes in the peak value of the AC voltage waveform from steady state occur, the capacitor clamps the voltage across the output lines at a value near the steady state peak value to damp out oscillations in voltage level and reduce the effect of positive feedback caused, for example, by interaction between the power factor correcting load and the leakage inductance of the output winding of a transformer in the power supply system. A damping resistor may be connected in parallel with the capacitor during start-up of the load, or whenever excessive voltage changes occur, to provide more rapid damping of the voltage oscillations.

Method and apparatus for stabilizing AC power supply systems connected

An auxiliary power supply system includes an internal combustion engine driving an alternator the output of which is rectified and supplied to DC bus lines across which a storage battery is connected. The DC bus lines may supply a consuming device such as an uninterruptible power supply or telecommunications system. The voltage across the bus lines is sensed and when the voltage drops below a selected value, indicating that the consuming devices is drawing power from the battery beyond a desired limit, the engine is turned on for a period of time to warm it up, during which the power from the generator is not supplied to the DC bus lines. Thereafter, the generator supplies power to the DC bus lines to supply the consuming device and partially recharge the battery until the consuming device is no longer drawing power, after which the engine is shut off. The power supply system includes a controller which monitors the intervals of time between turn-ons of the engine and if a selected period of time is exceeded, the engine is started without supplying power from the generator to the DC bus lines to allow the engine and generator to warm-up, enhancing maintenance of the system. The operating characteristics of the engine and generator are sensed and stored for access by an operator and warnings are provided if these conditions exceed acceptable limits.
