Disclosed is a catalytic material of a calcined noble metal-doped hydrous titanium oxide with a copper promoter compound. The catalytic material is effective for NO.sub.x reduction in an oxidizing exhaust stream form a combustion process is disclosed. Also described is a device for reduction of nitrogen oxides in an exhaust stream, particularly an automotive exhaust stream, that includes a substrate coated with the activated noble-metal doped hydrous metal oxide of the invention and methods for preparing the device.

A catalytic material of activated hydrous metal oxide doped with platinum, palladium, or a combination of these, and optionally containing an alkali or alkaline earth metal, that is effective for NO.sub.X reduction in an oxidizing exhaust stream from a combustion process is disclosed.
