A laser and methods for providing a continuous wave output beam. The laser and method includes positioning a micro-plasma chip capable of creating micro-plasmas within a resonant cavity. A gas is input into the resonant cavity and flows around the micro-plasma chip. Micro-plasmas ignite and excite the gas to create metastables. The metastables are further excited by an optical pump having an energy sufficient to cause the metastables to lase.

Optically pumped micro-plasma

Singlet oxygen metastables can be formed. A catalytic coating is formed on an interior surface of a flow reactor, and an oxygen containing species is flowed into the flow reactor to produce singlet oxygen metastables by a chemical reaction in the presence of the catalytic coating.

Catalytic generation of metastable singlet oxygen

A laser device includes an optical resonator, a microwave driven discharge device, and a source for a second gas. The microwave driven discharge device is disposed relative to the optical resonator. The microwave driven discharge device operates at a discharge power and gas flow rate to produce a selected amount of energetic singlet oxygen metastables flowing in the direction of the optical resonator. The second source for the second gas is disposed between the optical resonator and the microwave driven discharge device. The second gas reacts with the selected amount of energetic singlet oxygen metastables to form an excited species in an amount sufficient to support lasing of the excited species in the optical resonator.

High-power, high-throughput microwave discharge singlet oxygen generator for advanced electrical oxygen-iodine lasers

A miniature monolithic optical demultiplexer that comprises a dispersive optical element and a wavelength filter array. The miniature monolithic optical DWDM demultiplexer can be fabricated using micro- and nano-scale techniques common to the semiconductor industry. The operating principles and some characteristics of the DWDM demultiplexer are described. The device will be useful in the field of optical communication as a component within networks that perform all of the necessary switching, adding, dropping, and manipulating of optical signals entirely in the optical domain. With the inclusion of additional components, exemplary optical communication devices that can be built using the DWDM demultiplexer include optical add/drop multiplexers (OADM), Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) routers, tunable filters, optical cross connects, and the like.

Miniature monolithic optical demultiplexer

A diode laser-pumped magnetometer includes a diode laser that emits a polarized pumping laser beam with resonant optical radiation; and a K-cell through which a magnetic field is manifested from an independent source, the K-cell containing atoms with a dipole experiencing a torque due to the magnetic field. The atoms are excited by the resonant optical radiation of the pumping laser beam and periodically emitting a response radiation as they return to ground state such that the response radiation includes photons that indicate one unit of angular momentum indicative of the torque due to the magnetic field. Finally, a photodetector serves as a means for measuring the response radiation of the K-cell to indicate thereby a measure of the magnetic field in the K-cell from the independent magnetic source.

The miniature monolithic optical DWDM add-drop multiplexer can be fabricated using micro- and nano-scale techniques common to the semiconductor industry. Miniature monolithic optical add-drop multiplexer

An optical bench that provides a core component for a communication system that performs all of the necessary switching, adding, dropping, and manipulating of optical signals entirely in the optical domain. The optical bench comprises a dispersive optical element and a spatial light modulator. Various devices that are useful in the field of optical communication can be produced using the optical bench apparatus as a core component, with the addition of other components to the optical bench. Exemplary optical communication devices that can be built using the optical bench include optical add/drop multiplexers (OADM), Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) routers, tunable filters, tunable laser sources, optical cross connects, and the like.

The invention relates to high power, spark induced breakdown spectroscopy (SIBS) detectors with controllable delay time and to spark induced breakdown spectroscopy plasma generators with dual electrodes with specific electrode material, both for use in methods and apparatuses for detecting spectral signatures of atomic emissions, (e.g., from heavy metals such as lead, mercury, chromium, cadmium, arsenic, antimony and beryllium and radioactive materials such as uranium, plutonium, thorium and technetium) for measuring, for example, atomic concentrations of samples such as vapors and airborne particulates.

Induced breakdown spectroscopy detector system with controllable delay

A solid state dye laser incorporating a polyacrylamide gelatin solid host is doped with a laser dye such as rhodamine 6G and pyrromethene 556. The host is aligned within a lasing cavity and is excited to fluorescence by a pumping laser such as a second harmonic Nd:YAG. A container made from pyrex or inorganic oxide glass can be used to encapsulate and protect the gel solid. The solid state dye host exhibits 'self healing' after photobleaching due to dye migration within the encapsulated form.

A spectrometer comprises a tunable interferometer for producing a monochromatic continuous image at an image plane and including two mirrors having substantially parallel surfaces and an adjustable spacing therebetween, a radiation detector located at the image plane for recording the image, a filter arrangement for allowing at least one predetermined range of wavelengths to pass to the detector, and a lens arrangement for collecting radiation and limiting radiation incident on the interferometer to an angle which is substantially perpendicular to the substantially parallel surfaces of the two mirrors.

Method and apparatus for imaging

The invention comprises a mirrorless iodine laser having an elongated sealed iodine cell for both receiving and emitting laser energy. A pumping laser is used for projecting a laser beam into the sealed cell along its long axis in order to excite the iodine molecules within the cell and cause their release of laser energy. A heater is used for heating the sealed cell to a temperature that increases the amplified spontaneous emissions (ASE) of the iodine in the sealed cell when it is excited by the pumping laser.

High power tunable infrared mirrorless laser

An oxygen-iodine laser system that includes a source of gaseous singlet delta oxygen O.sub.2 ('.DELTA.) and a source of gaseous iodine monochloride, ICl, that directs their respective gases to manifolds and then to a mixing reacting nozzle. The nozzle discharges the mixed gases into a lasing cavity. When mixed the ICl dissociates into atomic iodine, I, and atomic chlorine, Cl, in the presence of the excited oxygen. The atomic iodine is subsequently excited to I(.sup.2 p1/2) lasing state by the excited oxygen. The lasing cavity, which includes optical means for extracting radiation, includes exhaust ports connected to an exhaust system. The advantage of using ICl in the laser rather than conventional source of atomic iodine is that for a given temperature the operating pressure of the laser can be higher without encountering efficiency reducing condensation of the iodine.

Chemical oxygen-iodine laser

This invention comprises an optically pumped iodine monofluoride laser operating on the B.sup.3 .pi.(0.sup.+).fwdarw.X.sup.2 .SIGMA..sup.+ system. Ground state IF was produced by the reaction between I.sub.2 and F.sub.2 in an optical cavity which was subsequently optically pumped with a high energy, broadband dye laser to produce lasing energy.
