An image printed using toner is optically scanned. Whether the toner is authorized is determined by one or multiple of the following. A toner scatter pattern can be identified within the scanned image and whether the identified toner scatter pattern conforms to expected toner scatter patterns associated with authorized toner can be determined. A color within the scanned image can be identified and whether the identified color conforms to an expected corresponding color associated with the authorized toner can be determined. An image artifact within the scanned image associated with failure of a cartridge in which the toner is installed can be identified and whether the image artifact conforms to expected image artifacts associated with failure of an authorized cartridge in which the authorized toner is installed can be determined.

Determining whether toner used to print image is authorized

An authentication device receives a unique fulfillment identifier from a client device prior to payload fulfillment. The unique fulfillment identifier corresponds to a unique payload identifier of a specific payload and a unique group identifier of a group of payloads including the specific payload. The authentication device authenticates the unique payload identifier based on the unique group identifier. In response to successfully authenticating the unique payload identifier based on the unique group identifier, the authentication device transmits an indication of successful authentication of the payload to the client device.
