A SCO containing a single unified motherboard is generally described. The SCO includes a touchscreen display configured to provide a visible display for interaction with a user. The SCO also has a built-in scanning capabilities within the motherboard and connectors to connect to the display and other components of the SCO. The motherboard includes a multicore processor configured to control the scanning, the display and the other components. The scanning capability is configured to scan an item for a symbol, detect the presence of the symbol on the item, identify information on the symbol related to the item, and control the display to display an identity, price of the item, and print a receipt for a customer.

Disclosed is a coin chute protector for a self-service terminal. The coin chute protector may comprise a body having a first surface and a second surface. The second surface may define a channel arranged to direct a liquid toward a first edge of the second surface. The coin chute protector may be sized to fit within an indentation defined by a coin chute of the self-service terminal.

Techniques are described to substantially reduce a return of wrong DVD or return of a right DVD in an improperly sized DVD case to a DVD rental kiosk. An RFID tag on the DVD, as well as an RFID tag on the case, are sensed external to the kiosk. A controllable shutter normally closes the return slot and is driven open only upon detecting the correct predetermined condition or conditions. A supplemental camera may be employed to detect if a single DVD in its case is being placed proximate the return slot by the user. Help screens are employed as part of the above described system to reduce potential customer frustration from returning a DVD to the wrong DVD rental kiosk and the like.

A self-service checkout system which continues operation when cash transaction options are not available. The self-service checkout system includes a cash dispenser, a display for displaying payment options, an input device for recording selection of payment options, including cash and non-cash transaction options, and a processor for disabling the cash transaction options when an amount of cash in the cash dispenser falls below a predetermined limit, but for otherwise continuing operation by allowing the non-cash transaction options.
