A method may include aligning a portion of each of a plurality of optical ribbons in a particular orientation or sequence using a set of alignment apparatus. The method may include stripping the portion of each of the plurality of optical ribbons to expose a cladding of each fiber of the plurality of optical ribbons using a set of stripping apparatus. The method may include hermetically sealing a tube around the portion of each of the plurality of optical ribbons using a set of sealing apparatus. The method may produce a hermetic optical fiber feedthrough.

To reduce cross-talk between adjacent hot electrodes, the present invention provides a ground plane, which extends beneath each side of a MEMS mirror platform covering opposite edges of a hot electrode along each side thereof. The ground plane includes an overhang section extending between the mirror platform and the hot electrode forming a first gap between the hot electrode and the overhang section, and a second gap between the overhang section and the mirror platform. The method of the present invention enables highly accurate construction using lithographic patterning and deep reactive ion etching (DRIE).

Integrated electrical cross-talk walls for electrostatic MEMS

An array of optical elements for processing a spatially dispersed optical beam including monitoring optical elements for determining the position of the optical beam in the array is disclosed. The monitoring optical elements have a width that varies in ay direction normal to the array axis, enabling the determination of the beam position across the monitoring elements in both x and y directions. The monitoring optical elements are preferably disposed in the end portions of the array for the beam tilt determination. The optical elements can be e.g. liquid crystal pixels or micro-mirrors.

The invention relates to a method of fabrication of staggered vertical comb drive actuators with relaxed lateral alignment tolerances. A device layer of a wafer is first etched from a front side using a self-aligned two-layer mask to define interdigited fingers of both moving and stationary combs. A second etch step is used for vertically thinning one of the two sets of fingers by selectively removing their top portions. The front side of the wafer is then bonded to a carrier wafer. The wafer is then selectively etched from the back side of the device layer so as to remove lower portions of the second set of fingers, thereby forming interdigited moving and stationary combs having vertically offset fingers.

Staggered vertical comb drive fabrication method

An optical coupler and method of making an optical filter is disclosed wherein a compound lens having two separate movable lenses are disposed between input/output ports and a filter element, such as a dichroic filter element. The filter is tuned during assembly by varying the gap between the movable lenses. Once it is established that optimum coupling is achieved and a desired wavelength response is achieved, the two lenses are fixed in place.

Optical coupling arrangement

A material machining system for machining a workpiece (PCB, PWB etc.) for drilling blind vias. The system includes a laser supply system ( ) for supplying discrete machining beams ( ) that are separate from each other. A deflecting devices ( ) is provided for deflecting each of the discrete machining beams to generate multiple independent beams at a plurality of positions within a field of operation on the workpiece. A scan lens ( ) having an entrance pupil configured to receive the multiple independent beams from the deflecting devices is provided proximate to the entrance pupil of the scan lens. A computer is used for controlling the deflecting devices to change the respective positions of the multiple independent beams in at least one co-ordinate direction within the field of operation. The deflecting devices include galvo/mirror pairs at the entrance pupil of the scan lens. This is accomplished since the scan lens has a relatively large entrance pupil and the mirror parts are small. The advantage of this arrangement is the ability of all beams to access a full working field (typically 2&times;2 inches) on the workpiece simultaneously, so that the highest efficiency of laser power utilization is achieved.
