A concentrate including, by weight (a) 10% to 60%, preferably 25% to 35%, of a saturated fatty acid selected from stearic or palmitic acid, or mixtures thereof, in an adduct of an amidopropyldimethyl-2-hydroxyethyl ammonium halide, with substantially no free acid present, and (b) 40% to 90%, preferably 65% to 75%, of a low molecular weight alcohol or saturated fatty alcohol or alcohols, for use in personal care products, including hair care and skin care compositions.

Solubilizing agents for active or functional organic compounds

An active or functional organic compound is solubilized in a phenylethyl ester, e.g. an aryl carboxylic ester of 2-phenylethyl alcohol, as a solvent, cosolvent or additive, to form a composition thereof. Representative active or functional organic compounds include personal care products, e.g. sunscreens containing UVA/UVB absorbing compounds, such as avobenzone and benzophenone-3. Such compositions also show increased critical wavelength and UVA/UVB absorbance ratio performance properties.

Compositions containing phenethyl aryl esters as solubilizing agents for active organic compounds

What is described herein is an antiperspirant composition including an active antiperspirant ingredient, and a phenylethyl, benzyl or substituted benzyl ester as additive therein, which is an aryl carboxylic ester of 2-phenylethyl alcohol, 1-phenylethyl alcohol or benzyl alcohol, which leaves a reduced visible white chalky residue on the skin of the user.

A sunscreen composition which includes at least one UV-B active ingredient therein, optionally with a UV-A active, and a phenylethyl or benzyl ester in an amount sufficient to boost the SPF rating of the UV-B active therein.

What is shown is a high purity adduct of castor oil and a cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride, charactered by the absence of free acid anhydride, which is used in personal care products. The adduct is made by a process, without side reactions, which includes (a) reacting castor oil and cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride at a temperature of 75-120&deg; C. for 4 to 24 hours, and then (b) continuing the reaction at room temperature for at least 1 week to react any remaining maleic anhydride. Skin and hair care formulations of such adducts are also described.
