The present invention relates to an antenna structure comprising a dielectric pellet and a dielectric substrate with upper and lower surfaces and at least one groundplane, wherein the dielectric pellet is elevated above the upper surface of the dielectric substrate such that the dielectric pellet does not directly contact the dielectric substrate or the groundplane, and wherein the dielectric pellet is provided with a conductive direct feed structure. A radiating antenna component is additionally provided and arranged so as to be excited by the dielectric pellet. Elevating the dielectric antenna component so that it does not directly contact the groundplane or the dielectric substrate significantly improves bandwidth of the antenna as a whole.

Hybrid antenna using parasitic excitation of conducting antennas by dielectric antennas

There is disclosed a dielectric resonator antenna adapted to resonate in an EHresonance mode, and also a method for the manufacture thereof. The desired resonance mode is achieved by careful positioning of a dielectric resonator () on a grounded substrate (), the resonator () being fed by way of a microstrip feed line () and a slot () in the grounded substrate (). Because the EHresonance mode has nulls in a direction of longitudinal extension of the dielectric resonator (), a plurality of antenna can be placed end-to-end so as to form an array with reduced coupling between adjacent antennas and with vertical polarisation, which is desirable for mobile communications applications.

Dielectric resonator antenna

A multi-polarisation dielectric resonator antenna () having three mutually orthogonal feeds () displaying Cpoint group symmetry is disclosed. The antenna () may be operated so as to determine the polarisation of any incoming signal, since the three feeds () have polarisations at 120 degrees to each other. Furthermore, a plurality of mult dielectric resonator antennas () may be formed into a composite dielectric resonator antenna with beamsteering, direction feeding and polarisation detection capability over a full 4&#x3c0; streradians.

Dielectric resonator antenna with mutually orthogonal feeds

A radiating antenna capable of generating or receiving radiation using a plurality of feeds and a dielectric resonator is disclosed. The purpose of using multiple feeds with a single dielectric resonator antenna is to produce several beams each having a 'boresight' (that is, a direction of maximum radiation on transmit, or a direction of maximum sensitivity on receive) in a different direction. Several such beams may be excited simultaneously to form a new beam in any arbitrary direction. The new beam may be incrementally or continuously steerable and may be steered through a complete 360 degree circle. The invention may be combined with an internal or external monopole antenna so as to cancel out the antenna backlobe or otherwise resolve the front/back ambiguity that arises with this type of dielectric resonance antenna. When receiving radio signals, electronic processing of such multiple beams may be used to find the direction of those signals thus forming the basis of a radio direction finding device. Further, by forming a transmitting beam or resolving a receiving beam in the direction of the incoming radio signal, a 'smart' or &#x2018;intelligent&#x2019; antenna may be constructed. The excitation of several beams together can, in some combinations, produce a system with a significantly greater bandwidth than a beam formed by exciting a single probe or aperture. The dielectric resonator is mounted on a ground plane, is preferably substantially cylindrical, and is fed, for example, by a number of internal probes or external ground plane apertures. An internal or external monopole antenna may be added to improve performance.

Steerable-beam multiple-feed dielectric resonator antenna

A radiating antenna capable of generating or receiving radiation using a plurality of dielectric resonator segments disposed in a circular array is disclosed. The purpose of using multiple dielectric resonator segments within a single antenna system is to produce several beams each having a &ldquo;boresight&rdquo; (that is, a direction of maximum radiation on transmit, or a direction of maximum sensitivity on receive) in a different direction. Several such beams may be excited simultaneously to form a new beam in any arbitrary direction. The new beam may be incrementally or continuously steerable and may be steered through a complete 360 degree circle. When two segments are excited simultaneously, the antenna may have a narrower main lobe and/or a smaller backlobe than for a single segment alone. When receiving radio signals, electronic processing of such multiple beams may be used to find the direction of those signals, thus forming the basis of a radio direction finding device. Further, by forming a transmitting beam or resolving a receiving beam in the direction of the incoming radio signal, a &ldquo;smart&rdquo; or &ldquo;intelligent&rdquo; antenna may be constructed. Beamsteering and smart antenna technology may also be used to steer a sharp null in a particular direction to avoid transmitting there or to avoid receiving interfering signals from that direction. The dielectric resonator segments are mounted on a ground plane, are substantially cylindrical or trapezoidal segments in shape, and are fed by internal probes or external ground plane apertures.

Multi-segmented dielectric resonator antenna

An array of dielectric resonator antenna elements ( ), each element ( ) being composed of a dielectric resonator disposed on a grounded substrate ( ), a plurality of feeds ( ) for transferring energy into and from the dielectric resonator elements ( ), wherein the feeds ( ) of each element ( ) are activatable either individually or in combination so as to produce at least one incrementally or continuously steerable beam which may be steered through a predetermined angle. Both the element beam patterns generated by the individual elements ( ) and the array factor generated by the array as a whole may be independently steered. When these are steered in synchronism, it is possible to improve the overall gain of the array in any particular direction.

A directional antenna assembly includes a dielectric structure having a surface. An array of wire antenna elements is positioned within or on the surface of the dielectric structure. At least one of the wire antenna elements is active, and the remainder of the wire antenna elements are passive.
