A downhole retrieval tool for engaging and retrieving an object from a wellbore includes a mandrel and a grapple having a contracted position and an expanded position. In the expanded position, the grapple engages the object for retrieval. The grapple is operably associated with an expansion member disposed on the mandrel to facilitate movement of the grapple between the contracted and expanded positions. The expansion member is releasably connected to the mandrel. In the event that the downhole tool and object, once secured to each other, are unable to be retrieved from the wellbore, the expansion member can be released from the mandrel which, in turn, causes the grapple to release from the object so that the downhole tool can be removed from the wellbore. A stored energy member facilitates movement of the grapple from the contracted position to the expanded position.

An apparatus and methods for manipulating and driving casing. The apparatus includes mechanically responsive elements for gripping an interior of a casing joint, and hydraulically responsive elements for gripping an interior of the casing joint responsive to pressure of drilling fluid flowing through the apparatus. One method comprises manipulating a casing joint by mechanically gripping an interior thereof, hydraulically gripping the interior of the casing joint responsive to drilling fluid pressure, and rotating the casing joint. Another method comprises driving casing by applying weight and torque thereto through engagement with an interior thereof.

Methods and apparatus for manipulating and driving casing

A cutting assembly for external conduits on a tubing string features a breakaway in the string that can be severed with a tensile force. Preferably each external conduit is run through a cutter housing. Upon severing of the string and applying a pickup force, a tension is applied to each external conduit since the severing of the string happens above all the cutter housings. Each housing cuts at least one conduit and the upper portion of the string brings with it the upper portion of the external conduit while the lower portions of each cut external conduit are retained in the cutter housings that remain downhole below the breakaway. In that manner there are no loose external conduit ends to interfere with and/or disturb subsequent fishing or other wellbore operations.

Auxiliary conduit cutting apparatus

A mill is configured to have large debris passages disposed among a series of radially extending blades. The mill center is adapted to accept a retention nut that supports a tool that secures the downhole tool being milled out, such as a packer. Reverse flow takes cuttings into the large open area between the blades to pass up in an annular space around a support for the retention nut. The passage then opens up to a maximum dimension leaving only the tubular wall needed for structural strength to support the mill and conduct cuttings into a debris removal tool.
