A method and apparatus for allocating spectrum within a wireless communication system is provided herein. During operation, a first base station will determine a location of a UE wishing to transmit. A database will be accessed containing wireless coverage area information for base stations with overlapping coverage with the first base station. Based on this information the first base station will determine if the UE is within an overlapping coverage area of multiple base stations. Spectrum will be assigned to the wireless equipment in a guard band, based at least in part on the determination that the UE is not within the overlapping coverage area.

Method and apparatus for allocating spectrum

At a two-way communications apparatus () of choice, one can detect () a two-way communications apparatus user instruction and then, in response to detecting that instruction, provide () certain information to a nearby two-way communications apparatus () via a near field communications link (). This information can comprise, at least in part, a biometric template as pertains to a user of the two-way communications apparatus and a privacy policy as pertains to further dissemination of the biometric template.

Each user can contribute to an original search and to refining the results of the search. Preferences of all of the users are considered in the search even while those preferences can be kept private. In some embodiments of the present invention, at least two users each submit a search query. The multiple search queries are logically combined to produce one set of search results. The results can be reviewed by the users and refined if necessary. In some embodiments, a search query can be specified by a single user, but the search engine takes into consideration the stored preferences of multiple users (in addition to the search query itself, of course).

In certain embodiments, a method for managing operational parameters of a cognitive radio device to minimize non-compliance with a regulatory policy involves sensing a change in an operational condition that will affect compliance with a current operational policy; estimating a time at which the current operational policy will become invalid; selecting a method for determining how to update the current operational policy; and updating the current operational policy of the cognitive radio device. Other embodiments may incorporate more, fewer or other elements.

Method and apparatus for setting and managing operational dynamics within cognitive radio networks

During operation of a secondary communication system, nodes having different channel monitoring capabilities or requirements will cooperatively monitor possible frequencies for transmissions, each node using only a subset of all possible modulation sensing schemes. All nodes will share channel occupancy information to other nodes within the communication system. For example, a first group of nodes may monitor possible frequencies for television transmissions, while a second group of nodes may monitor the possible frequencies for APCO 25 transmissions. A group of nodes may also cooperatively monitor possible frequencies for more than one type of modulation transmission. Channel information will be shared among the nodes.

Method and apparatus for determining appropriate channels for communication

In certain embodiments of a cognitive radio, a method of establishing operational policies, involves determining that a new policy decision should be made; requesting a policy decision from an authority having more computing power than the cognitive radio; receiving the policy decision from the authority; and implementing the policy decision in the cognitive radio. Other embodiments may incorporate more, fewer or other elements.

Managing operation of a cognative radio by an authority

During operation of a secondary communication system, a device will perform spectrum sensing of certain channels (either by itself or as part of a group of nodes). When activity is found on a channel from a primary user, other devices will be notified that the channel is not available for use. The device may then modify its spectrum sensing to assist another device (or group of devices) that have not yet found activity on a different set of channels. By assigning additional channels to devices with extra capacity, the overall spectrum-sensing efficiency and performance of the communication systemis raised.

During operation of a secondary communication system, cells () are formed by a plurality of localized nodes () to alert other nodes within the cell of frequencies which must be protected or otherwise avoided. All nodes within the cell monitor a differing subset of all frequencies available, and share information with respect to acceptable and protected frequencies with each other via low-power, short-range communication. Each node then forms a list of available channels for communication, and chooses a single node to report this information back to controller.

An apparatus and method enables elements of a phase locked loop (PLL) (,). The PLL,includes a plurality of elements (,). Each element produces an output signal (,or,). Each element has a response time (t,&minus;t,) defined by the difference in time between a first time (t,) at which the element is enabled and a second time (t,), occurring after the first time (t,), at which the output signal of the element reaches a steady state condition. A voltage controlled oscillator (,) of the plurality of elements, having a first response time (t,&minus;t,) is enabled at the first time (t,) responsive to a first control signal (,). A loop divider (,) of the plurality of elements, having a second response time less than the first response time (t,&minus;t,), is enabled responsive to the first response time (t,&minus;t,) and a second control signal (,). The present invention advantageously provides fast lock time for the PLL (,).

Apparatus and method for enabling elements of a phase locked loop

A cellular cordless telephone (10) operates with both a cordless base station (180) and a cellular base station (190) and cellular control terminal (196). In one embodiment (FIG. 2), a cellular cordless telephone (100) includes a cellular transceiver (120), antenna (128), keyboard (140), a display (180), handset (160), and microcomputer (130) together with a cordless transceiver (110) and antenna (118), all of which may be in a single housing. In another embodiment (FIG. 3), a cellular cordless telephone (200) includes a cellular telephone (220) and a cordless telephone transceiver (210) which may be a plugable module. Whenever cellular cordless telephone (10) is within range of cordless base station (180), telephone calls may be made over the cordless radio channel or transferred from the cellular radio channels to the cordless radio channel. If the cellular cordless telephone (10) thereafter moves out of range of the cordless base station (180), telephone calls may be made over the cellular radio channels or transferred from the cordless radio channel to one of the cellular telephone channels.

A method (200) and device (100) provide an efficient linear power amplifier that generates a variable-envelope radio frequency RF signal. The method includes the steps of: A) using an efficient envelope-following unit to output a supply voltage in accordance with a variable envelope of an input baseband signal, wherein using the efficient envelope-following unit includes: 1) using a bandwidth-limiting mapping unit to determine a reference signal based on the baseband signal; and 2) using an envelope-tracking power converter to output a supply voltage, responsive to the reference signal, to the linear RF power amplifier; B) providing an RF input signal with amplitude and phase information to a linear RF power amplifier; and C) using the linear RF power amplifier to output a power-efficient amplified variable-envelope RF signal with substantially a same amplitude and phase information as the RF input signal.

A communication device including a plurality of frequency synthesizers (24, 28, 30). At least one of the frequency synthesizers (24) is driven with a reference frequency from a crystal oscillator (58). The at least one frequency synthesizer (24) includes a phase locked loop with a fractional-N divider (48) which is programmed by a control circuit (64) to vary as a function of temperature compensation, frequency compensation, and a frequency multiplication factor. The output (46) of the at least one frequency synthesizer (24) is used to provide a compensated reference frequency input for the remaining frequency synthesizers (28, 30). The radio provides all the frequency synthesizers (24, 28, 30) with temperature and frequency compensation using a reference frequency from a crystal oscillator (58) and only one high resolution frequency compensating synthesizer (24).

An error suppressing circuit (301) and method therefor for a phase locked loop (PLL) (300). According to one embodiment of the present invention, a transient condition, for example, a bandwidth switch, in the PLL (300) is detected. The PLL (300) is opened for a period of time (509) responsive to detecting the transient condition. The phase of a reference frequency signal (115) and the phase of a output frequency signal (116 or 117) are synchronized after a lapse of the period of time (509). The PLL (300) is closed responsive to the phase of the reference frequency signal (115) and the phase of the output frequency signal (116 or 117) being synchronized. The present envention advantageously reduces the length of time it takes for the PLL (300) to correct for the phase and frequency error generated by the transient condition, and is capable of operating with various types of PLLs.

Error suppressing circuit and method therefor for a phase locked loop

A frequency synthesizer (10) including a synthesizer loop (12) with a fractional-N divider (14), and including a divider control circuit (18) and a combining circuit (22). The divider control circuit (18) provides a variable divide value (20) to the divider (14). The carry values of two accumulators (24, 26) having differing accumulator lengths are applied in parallel to the combining circuit (22). Each of the accumulators (24, 26) provides a portion of a desired fractional divide value (20). The combining circuit (22) also adds an integer divide value (36) to the fractional divide value (16). By coupling the accumulators (24, 26) in parallel, a high frequency resolution with minimal spurious frequencies is achieved, using a simple, low cost circuit.

In a phase locked loop (PLL) (308), an edge proximity detector (302) identifies a phase error, indicative of a difference between a phase of a reference frequency signal (115) and a phase of an output frequency signal (116 or 117), as either desirable or undesirable. When the phase error is identified as desirable, a counter (301) determines a rate of change of the phase error over a first predetermined time period (412) to provide an indication of frequency error (306) between the frequency of the reference frequency signal (206) and the frequency of the output frequency signal (116 or 117); and a loop bandwidth adjuster (310) controls a transition between a first and a second loop bandwidth state of the PLL (308) responsive to the indication of the frequency error (306). When the phase error is identified as undesirable, the PLL (308) operates in the second loop bandwidth state. The present invention advantageously provides an accurate determination of when to vary the loop bandwidth of the PLL (308).
