During a feature-selection technique, an electronic device calculates combinations of features and noise vectors, where a given combination corresponds to a given feature and a given noise vector. Then, the electronic device determines statistical associations between information specifying types of events and the combinations, where a given statistical association corresponds to the types of events and a given combination. Moreover, the electronic device identifies a noise threshold associated with the combinations. Next, for a group of combinations having statistical associations equal to or greater than the noise threshold, the electronic device selects a subset of the features based at least in part on a first aggregate property of the group of combinations, where the first aggregate property comprises numbers of occurrences of the features in the group of combinations.

Technique for identifying features

An electronic device may access one or more records associated with an individual based at least in part on an identifier of the individual. Then, based at least in part on values of features associated with a predetermined segment in a population that includes the individual and values of the features in the one or more records, the electronic device assigns the individual to the predetermined segment. Note that the features may be identified based at least in part on count statistics of the features in combinations of features for the population, and the predetermined segment may be based at least in part on distances (such as Euclidean distances) computed using values of the features. Next, the electronic device provides a recommendation for the individual, where the recommendation is based at least in part on one or more attributes associated with one or more other individuals in the predetermined segment.

Automatic and blind segmentation of diverse data

An apparatus determines patterns of occurrence of compound variables based on a set of mathematical interactions and patterns of occurrence of a set of electrical signals. Then, the apparatus calculates statistical relationships corresponding to a pattern of occurrence of neural activity of one or more organisms and the patterns of occurrence of the compound variables. Moreover, the apparatus determines numbers of occurrences of electrical signals that were used to determine compound variables in at least a statistically significant subset of the compound variables, and determines numbers of different mathematical interactions that were used to determine the compound variables in the subset for the electrical signals that are associated with the corresponding numbers of occurrences. Next, the apparatus identifies one or more of the electrical signals as one or more association variables based on the numbers of occurrences and/or the numbers of different mathematical interactions.

Technique for identifying association variables

An apparatus determines patterns of occurrence of compound variables based on a set of mathematical interactions and patterns of occurrence of a set of biological variables. Then, the apparatus calculates statistical relationships corresponding to a pattern of occurrence of a trait in a group of life forms and the patterns of occurrence of the compound variables. Moreover, the apparatus determines numbers of occurrences of biological variables that were used to determine compound variables in at least a statistically significant subset of the compound variables, and determines numbers of different mathematical interactions that were used to determine the compound variables in the subset of the compound variables for the biological variables that are associated with the corresponding numbers of occurrences. Next, the apparatus identifies one or more of the biological variables as one or more association variables based on the numbers of occurrences and the numbers of different mathematical interactions.

An apparatus, and related method, for identifying one or more association variables is described. The apparatus includes at least one processor, at least one memory, and at least one program module stored in the memory configured to be executed by the processor. The program module includes instructions for selecting a subset of temporal onsets in a set of temporal onsets, instructions for determining a statistical relationship between the subset and a pattern of occurrence of a variable, and instructions for identifying the variable as an association variable in accordance with the statistical relationship. The subset includes one or more first temporal onsets corresponding to one or more instances of an event, and the set of temporal onsets includes the subset of temporal onsets and one or more second temporal onsets corresponding to one or more instances of a reoccurrence event.

Apparatus for determining association variables

An apparatus, and related method, for providing information based on variables associated with a type of headache is described. The apparatus may include at least one processor, at least one memory, and at least one program module. The program module may be stored in the memory and may be configured or configurable to be executed by the processor. The program module may include instructions for receiving a list of variables. Note that these variables may be triggers that at least in part induce a headache associated with the type of headache in at least one individual if at least the one individual is exposed to one or more of the variables. The program module may include instructions for determining that at least the one individual is at risk of experiencing a headache associated with the type of headache during a first time interval. This determination may be based on the variables. Furthermore, the program module may include instructions for providing a message to at least the one individual in accordance with the determined risk.

Apparatus for providing information based on association variables

An apparatus, and related method, for identifying one or more association variables that are associated with a trait are described. During the method, the apparatus may calculate statistical relationships corresponding to a pattern of occurrence of the trait in a group of life forms and patterns of occurrence of compound variables in a set of biological variables of the group of life forms. Then, the apparatus may determine a ranking of a number of occurrences of biological variables in at least a subset of the compound variables that have statistical relationships greater than a statistical confidence value. Next, the apparatus may identify one or more of the biological variables in the set of biological variables as the one or more association variables based on the ranking.

An apparatus, and related method, for determining one or more association variables is described. The apparatus includes at least one processor, at least one memory, and at least one program module. The program module is stored in the memory and is configurable to be executed by the processor. The program module includes instructions for determining a statistical relationship between one or more temporal onsets corresponding to one or more events and a pattern of occurrence of a compound variable. The compound variable corresponds at least to a pattern of occurrence of a first variable and a pattern of occurrence of a second variable. The determining includes contributions from presence and absence information in the pattern of occurrence of the compound variable.

An apparatus for aggregating individuals based on variables associated with a type of headache is described. The apparatus may include at least one processor, at least one memory, and at least one program module. The program module may be stored in the memory and may be configured or configurable to be executed by the processor. The program module may include instructions for receiving a list of variables, where the variables in the list of variables may be triggers that at least in part induce a headache associated with the type of headache in at least one individual if at least the one individual is exposed to one or more of the variables. The program module may include instructions for selecting a first forum from multiple forums. Note that the selection is based on at least a subset of the variables in the list of variables, the first forum is associated with the type of headache and at least the subset of the variables, and the first forum facilitates exchange of first information associated with the type of headache. Furthermore, the program module may include instructions for providing second information associated with the first forum to at least the one individual.

Apparatus for aggregating individuals based on association variables

An apparatus, and related method, for determining one or more association variables is described. The apparatus includes at least one processor, at least one memory, and at least one program module stored in the memory configured to be executed by the processor. The program module includes instructions for selecting a subset of temporal onsets in a set of temporal onsets, instructions for determining a statistical relationship between the subset of temporal onsets and a pattern of occurrence of a variable, and instructions for identifying the variable as a migraine variable in accordance with the statistical relationship. The subset of temporal onsets includes one or more onsets corresponding to one or more migraines experienced by at least one individual, and the set of temporal onsets includes the subset of temporal onsets and one or more temporal onsets corresponding to one or more additional headaches experienced by at least the one individual.

An apparatus, and related method, for collecting information, such as that associated with one or more variables, is described. The apparatus may include at least one processor, at least one memory, and at least one program module. The program module may be stored in the memory and may be configurable to be executed by the processor. The program module may include instructions for a set of pre-determined questions, instructions for asking, one or more times during a time interval, a subset of pre-determined questions in the set of pre-determined questions, instructions for receiving, one or more times during the time interval, answers to the subset of pre-determined questions, and instructions for receiving configuration instructions. The configuration instructions may select the subset of pre-determined questions that are asked.
