An improved I/O device, such as an audio/video router, includes at least a motherboard, such as a matrix board, including a plurality of locating slots and a plurality of connectors located on the motherboard such that when the motherboard is mounted in the I/O device, the plurality of connectors are positioned horizontally across the I/O device. The I/O device further includes a plurality of input/output (I/O) cards, such as audio/video cards, each of the I/O cards including a locating slot and two I/O connectors. In an I/O device of the present invention, the locating slot of each of the I/O cards mates with a respective locating slot of the motherboard such that the two I/O connectors of each of the I/O cards vertically straddle a respective connector of the motherboard thus maximizing a number of inputs and outputs able to be provided in the rear of the I/O device.

An improved rack unit assembly having at least one receptacle, such as a power receptacle, includes a cover for removable attachment to the assembly, where the panel includes an opening in the panel for permitting a connector on a cord, such as a power cord, to extend through the panel to releasably engage the at least one receptacle in the assembly, and a channel originating at the opening for receiving and guiding the cord. Optionally, the channel in the cover may include tabs along the channel for keeping the cord in the channel and the opening of the cover for the rack unit may include a means of strain relief for preventing the connector on the cord from inadvertently disengaging from the receptacle.

A bidirectional serial port for digital audio data includes a cable connector for coupling the port to a cable, a cable driver having a serial digital audio signal as an input and also having an output, a receiver having an input and an output, and an impedance and level matching network coupled to the output of the cable driver, the input of the receiver, and the cable connector. The port can be selectively configured either as an input port by causing the impedance and level matching network to act as a cable termination or as an output port by allowing the serial digital audio signal to pass through the cable driver and the impedance and level matching network to the cable connector.
