A process for regenerating a used acidic ionic liquid catalyst comprising contacting the used ionic liquid catalyst with at least one metal in a regeneration zone in the absence of added hydrogen under regeneration conditions for a time sufficient to increase the activity of the ionic liquid catalyst is described. In one embodiment, regeneration is conducted in the presence of a hydrocarbon solvent.

A pretreatment process is disclosed for increasing conversion and reducing the fouling rate of reforming catalysts wherein the catalyst is pretreated at a temperature from 1025.degree. F. to 1275.degree. F. in a reducing atmosphere prior to contacting the catalyst with a hydrocarbon feed in the presence of hydrogen.

The reactor system comprises a steel portion having provided thereon a Group VIB metal protective layer to isolate the steel portion from hydrocarbons, applied to a thickness effective for completely isolating the steel portion from the hydrocarbon environment. The protective layer is anchored to the steel substrate through an intermediate carbide-rich, bonding layer.
