A fiber optic splicing system for accomodating optical fibers having similar or distinctly different buffered coating sizes. The system comprises a first pair of housing halves forming a body with opposed ends adapted to receive two optical fiber of a first similar size; a second pair of housing halves forming a body with opposed ends adapted to receive two optical fibers of a second similar size, different from said first size; and a third pair of housing halves forming a body having one end formed to receive one of said first size of optical fiber and another end formed to receive one of said second, different size of optical fiber. Holding means in the form of slidable end caps cooperate with the ends of the housing to apply radial compression thereto to maintain the fibers in position without the use of crimps or adhesives.

Fiber optic splice assembly

A fiber optic splicing system for accommodating optical fibers having similar or distinctly different buffered coating sizes. The system comprises a first pair of housing halves forming a body with opposed ends adapted to receive two optical fiber of a first similar size; a second pair of housing halves forming a body with opposed ends adapted to receive two optical fibers of a second similar size, different from said first size; and a third pair of housing halves forming a body having one end formed to receive one of said first size of optical fiber and another end formed to receive one of said second, different size of optical fiber. Holding means in the form of slidable end caps cooperate with the ends of the housing to apply radial compression thereto to maintain the fibers in position without the use of crimps or adhesives. A center portion of the halves can be formed to accept elastic means for receiving fibers or, alternatively, a hollow sleeve which includes the elastic means therein.

An emergency fiber optic cable repair apparatus including a length of multi-fiber optical cable preterminated at both ends, the preterminated optical fibers at each end being spliced to respective splicing devices mounted upon a respective splice cradle positioned within a respective of two enclosures to each of which an end of a damaged fiber optic cable can be coupled so that the optical fibers at each end of such damaged cable can be spliced to a respective splice cradle.

Emergency preterminated cable apparatus

A fiber optic component housing includes cushioning means for the component and strain relief for the fiber optic cable. The latter includes a two part subassembly attached to the cable and further includes means which engage ribs on the inside of the housing. The engaging means is an annular flange.

Housing for a fiber optic component

An optical fiber-lens connector assembly maintains a critical fiber-to-lens interface during temperature excursions over the range of -40.degree. C. to +60.degree. C. by employing a spring loaded bushing mounted within a connector body. The fiber is fixed to the bushing and the spring acting on the bushing keeps the fiber accurately located with respect to the lens when the lens body grows and shrinks with the temperature changes.

Fiber optical connector with lens

An optical fiber lens-connector assembly includes a plastic lens body joined to a tubular connector of a low thermal expansion glass. The connector includes a glass fiber guide formed of the same material (e.g., a borosilicate glass) having a substantially similar expansion coefficient. The assembly provides greater temperature stability when cycled over a wide temperature range. Fused silica quartz can also be employed as the connector material.

Fiber optic connector

A fiber optic drawer connector assembly comprises an insert having an inner cavity for the insertion of an optical lens assembly and an associated ferrule fiber holder. The insert is at least partially surrounded by a shroud and the shroud in turn positioned in the interior of a housing so that a flange at the end of the shroud comes into abutment with a stopping member at one end of the housing. The housing, as well as subassemblies enclosed thereby, is designed to be inserted into and through an aperture in a wall until an intermediate flange extending from the exterior surface of the housing comes into contact with a surface on one side of the wall. A cap is threaded over an open end of the housing and into abutment with an insert flange. Springs are provided so that the insert is maintained in secure relationship to the housing and shroud and so that the lens and ferrule are secure within the insert.
