A redundant trigger section that actuates a device between operational positions in response to a controlled signal includes a housing including an internal through passage and a plurality of chambers formed in a wall of the housing, a pilot piston disposed within the internal through passage, an actuating piston connected to the pilot piston, and a plurality of triggers connected to the actuating piston. Upon receipt of the controlled signal by a first tubing pressure chamber of the plurality of chambers, at least one trigger of the plurality of triggers activates the actuating piston, which pushes the pilot piston within the internal through passage from an initial position to a final position.

Redundant trigger system

A coring method includes disposing a coring tool in a borehole adjacent a subterranean formation to be sampled. The method further includes determining a property of the formation and selecting a coring tool operational mode based on the property of the formation. The method also includes obtaining a sample from the formation using the coring tool operational mode. A type of coring shaft also may be selected based on the property of the formation.

Coring tools and related methods

A coring bit assembly for conveyance via wireline or drillstring in a wellbore extending into a subterranean formation. The coring bit assembly includes a coring shaft and a thrust ring coupled to an end of the coring shaft. A downhole coring tool conveyable within a borehole extending into a subterranean formation, wherein the downhole coring tool comprises a housing, a hollow coring bit extendable from the housing, a first motor operable to rotate the coring bit, and a second motor operable to extend the coring bit into the subterranean formation through a sidewall of the borehole in a direction not substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the borehole proximate the downhole coring tool. A static sleeve disposed in but rotationally independent of the coring bit receives a portion of a core sample of the formation resulting from extension of the coring bit into the formation. The static sleeve comprises a protrusion extending radially inward toward the core sample sufficiently to mark the core sample.

Downhole coring tools and methods of coring

An apparatus for conveyance via wireline or drillstring in a wellbore extending into a subterranean formation, the apparatus comprising a coring bit assembly, a first motor operatively coupled to the coring bit assembly via a gear box to rotationally drive the coring bit assembly, and a second motor to drive the coring bit assembly into the formation while the coring bit assembly is rotated by the first motor, wherein the coring bit assembly comprises a feature to permit the coring bit assembly to be broken when the coring bit assembly becomes stuck in the formation.

An example coring tool includes a cylindrical body having a leading edge to contact a substance and a cavity defined at least in part by an inner surface of the cylindrical body. The inner surface is to engage and retain a sample from the substance with a plurality of raised features. The raised features are shaped so that at least one of the raised features or an exterior surface of a sample in the cavity deforms to increase a force required to remove the sample from the cavity.

Methods comprising: lowering a downhole tool into a wellbore extending into a subterranean formation, wherein the downhole tool comprises a coring tool and a measurement tool; performing a measurement regarding the formation using the measurement tool; determining a section of interest within the formation relative to an axis of the coring tool based on the measurement; orienting a coring bit of the coring tool relative to the section of interest; and extending the oriented coring bit into the formation.

Formation coring apparatus and methods

Example downhole marking apparatus and methods to use the same are disclosed. A disclosed example apparatus includes a coring tool assembly for use in extracting a core sample from a subterranean formation adjacent a borehole; a sample container retainer operatively coupled to the coring tool assembly, wherein the sample container retainer is configured to hold a sample container configured to receive the core sample; and a scriber operatively coupled to the sample container retainer and configured to mark a surface of the sample container.

Downhole marking apparatus and methods

A coring apparatus that includes a housing that is selectively pivotable in a downhole tool, a rotatable coring bit, a gear drive rotatively coupled to the housing, and a key member configured to engage an inner surface of the gear drive and an outer surface of the coring bit and configured to maintain a rotational relationship between the coring bit and the gear drive. A pinion is rotatively coupled to the housing and configured to engage an outer surface of the gear drive, and a motor is affixed to the housing and operatively coupled to the pinion.
